If you were one of the few people who used Copilot inside WhatsApp to solve quick doubts, write messages or simply play with prompts, start saying goodbye because on January 15 it will stop working.

It is not because nobody used it, but because Meta is going to prohibit third-party bots from continuing to operate on its platform. And this drags everyone, Copilot, ChatGPT and any other conversational assistant that is not theirs. So, they are clear about it, if someone wants AI in WhatsApp, they will have to use the app’s own AI.

Only their own AI fits

During 2024 and part of 2025 we saw how WhatsApp filled up with bots, experiments and assistants that could talk to you as if you were chatting with any contact, and it was strange, like there were many stimuli in the same platform, very fun.

But now Meta wants to change everything and does not want external conversational models inside the app, because they will only allow AI that manages external services, not assistants that live inside the chat and compete for attention.

Microsoft is leaving because they are being forced

Microsoft published a statement explaining that Meta was “banning” it from its platforms, that there was nothing wrong with Copilot, because of course, it seemed like it was not working well or there had been some kind of problem.

They also gave information on how to proceed to save their chats with the AI before the final date arrives (because if you do not export it, it will disappear).

Microsoft proposes alternatives

To avoid leaving anyone stranded, Microsoft recommends that users switch to the Copilot mobile app (iOS and Android), the web version, from any browser or the desktop app (which works with voice and vision), but none of these options is as automatic and natural as its use in WhatsApp.

Now they require registration, installations, new habits… all that stuff that makes many people hesitate because, honestly, WhatsApp was the perfect place to interact with an AI without needing anything else.

ChatGPT too

Let no one think that this is only against Microsoft, OpenAI is also out of this equation. WhatsApp will stop being a place where you can talk to ChatGPT officially, and it is for the same reason, implementing Meta AI in the conversations of the apps that belong to Meta, it is not hard to understand, right?

But…

We already know, you are not very amused that there is AI in your conversations because the messages can be read and analyzed.. So many users are worried about their privacy…

A race for AI

The interpretation we can extract from all this is that they are preparing the ground to be the next dominant technology (because, obviously, they seek to dominate the market) and Meta is counterattacking against OpenAI, Google and Microsoft (its rivals for the problem), besides, WhatsApp is one of Meta’s “most powerful weapons”, they cannot lend it to the enemy.

What does all this mean for normal people?

That you will not have a blue circle in your WhatsApp app and that if you want to access AI you will need to download AI apps, although you will be able to access Meta AI (but it will also be able to read your messages, oh)

This experiment is ending, and it makes clear that people use AI because they want it in their life, they do not want to have 30 different apps… So, Meta has seen that it can take advantage and that is why only Meta AI will be allowed in its apps. Strategic, aggressive… we will see how it goes after January 15 without sharing spaces with Microsoft. There is only room for one, and you will decide if you use it or if you look for your conversations with AI somewhere else!
