This TikToker has already accumulated millions of views on this video because he gets straight to the point: five tips that should make you distrust the shop, because they could be charging you a lot more unnecessarily. So, watch out!
The estimate price is much higher than usual
One of the most basic examples is being overcharged for repairs that are particularly simple, like replacing brake pads, which are estimated to cost between $300 and $500, but they charge you $750, which is pretty exaggerated, don’t you think?
So, if they want to charge you more for a simple repair that doesn’t add up, the best thing is to get a second opinion. That’s what the market is for, to be able to choose where we want to have our car repaired without having to settle for the first option by obligation. And many times, with that, we avoid a big hassle.
Deceptive diagnosis
Another very common trick, according to this TikToker: you go in for one specific issue, but they tell you that if you don’t replace other parts too, they won’t fix it. They present it as a “complete package,” but the reality is that many of those repairs aren’t necessary. If you feel like they’re rushing you or scaring you, the healthiest thing is to go to another shop where they won’t pressure you into repairs… there are plenty of shops out there!
They charge for original parts but…
They put in others. Yes. Many times, they charge you, claiming they are using original factory parts (OEM), but the reality is that they are using generic or lower quality parts. Of course, this point is delicate because not only does it affect the price, but it can also end up affecting the safety of your vehicle.
If you’re paying a premium for quality, you have the right to ask for proof: packaging, invoices, or at least have them show you the part before installing it!
They don’t give you an estimate
Here is where many shops play their game. You go in asking how much it costs to change the belt, and they tell you “about 300”. Then, when you pick up the car, they charge you 650 because “there were other things.” Without a detailed, written estimate, you can’t claim anything. If a shop refuses to give it to you, bad sign…
Your car comes out worse than it went in
This is the hardest to prove, but it happens often, unfortunately. There are unscrupulous mechanics who directly cause a problem so that you’ll come back. They mess with something that shouldn’t be touched or leave it loose so it fails soon after. When that happens, the best thing is to go to another professional and ask for a report. If you can prove malpractice, you’ll have grounds to claim.
How can I avoid scams?
You don’t need to be a mechanic expert, just be a little alert. Here are some basic tips that can save you a lot of trouble:
- Look for reviews before choosing a shop. Nowadays, with a quick search, you can see real reviews on Google, forums, or social media. Don’t just settle for the closest shop for convenience or the one a friend recommends, research first and choose the one with the best reviews.
- Demand a fixed and signed estimate. Make sure it’s clear what they’re going to do, what parts they’re going to change, and how much it’s going to cost. No surprises later. Plus, this way, if the price is different when it’s time to pay, you can report it, and you’ll have a good chance of winning.
- The most important one, at least for us, get a second opinion if something doesn’t add up. If the diagnosis sounds exaggerated or the price seems excessive, ask for another opinion.
No one is born knowing about engines, but that doesn’t mean they can take advantage of you. So don’t let them treat you like a fool just because you don’t understand cars. If you inform yourself a little, ask the right questions, and don’t accept anything without thinking it through twice, you’re already ahead!
