Attention all units! The Social Security Administration (SSA) has issued a very important warning: Social Security checks could be cancelled, beneficiaries need to meet some mandatory requirements and if they do not comply, their checks could be permanently suspended. So, it is imperative that you stay up to date with the laws to prevent this from happening to you. We explain the entire SSA alert below.
Keep your information up to date
Millions of people across the country depend on social security income, so one of the most important things for the SSA is that as a beneficiary, you keep your information up to date. This will avoid delays in payments with which you can pay for the basic needs of every citizen (housing, food, and medical care).
Reasons why the SSA cancels checks
As we have seen, updating information is vital for payments to reach you, however, the SSA recommends updating or reviewing several other points:
- If you have moved, notify the SSA or its website so that the checks and information that arrive by mail actually reach your mailbox.
- If your family situation has changed, that is, if you have married or divorced and now use a different last name.
- Have you lost your job? Or have you been hired at a new place? Report this as well, since many payments will depend on your income.
If you change any of these items and don’t report them, you may not receive your payments, your payments may be cancelled, or you may even be fined!
SSA Routine Checks
That’s right, to ensure that payments arrive correctly, the Social Security Administration conducts regular checks to make sure everything is correct. If they find anything unclear or have concerns about possible irregularities, they will begin an investigation and stop the checks immediately (with advance notice, of course).
What payments will arrive in December?
The SSA has detailed the exact distribution dates for Social Security payments for December. If you requested your checks after May 1997 and meet the birth date conditions, you should be aware:
- Born between the 1st and the 10th: You will receive your payment on December 11th.
- Born between the 11th and the 20th: The checks will arrive on December 18th.
- Born between the 21st and the 31st: You will receive your payment on December 24th.
Please wait three business days if your payments have not arrived between those days, and if after this, they do not arrive, contact SSA customer service for help with your case.
What about the COLA?
Let’s talk about the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which as of 2025 will be 2.5%, a check used so that the most vulnerable people can cover their basic needs without even noticing that inflation is out of control. So, depending on the age range you are in, it could increase its base price from $38 to $170!
