What is the Real ID and why is it important?
The Real ID is a new form of identification that meets stricter federal requirements. You can recognize it by a gold star in the upper right corner. After the date mentioned, it will be required to board domestic flights and access federal facilities.
However, five states are “exempt” from this new rule.
The exception
If you live in Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, or Vermont, you can opt for an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL). These licenses meet federal requirements and allow you to cross land borders with Canada and Mexico, in addition to serving as valid ID for domestic flights.
And the rest of the country?
For residents of the other 45 states, getting a Real ID is essential if they plan to fly within the country or visit federal buildings. If your current license doesn’t have the gold star, chances are you won’t be allowed access.
How to get a Real ID
The process varies by state, but generally you’ll need:

- Two proofs of state residency
