Christmas is almost knocking on our door and we are all ready to find out what Santa has left for us under the tree! But remember that the world does not stop because it is Christmas, and that we all have a responsibility to the Administration. So, the best thing is to take a pen and paper to write down all the changes that the month of December will undergo due to the number of holidays! But the Administration will not forget any of us and guarantees that all payments will arrive on time at their destination!
What Social Security payments will we have in 2025?
The payment schedule is very simple, and we are going to explain it to you below so that it is very clear:
- SSI (Supplemental Security Income) payments: It arrives on the first day of each month, and it is the only payment that you can supplement with another Social Security benefit (this means that you can receive SSI and another different payment from the SSA because it is divided into a special category).
- Retirement payments, survivors’ relatives or individuals with disabilities (for those who began receiving benefits before May 1997) arrive on the third day of each month.
- Retirement payments, survivors’ relatives or individuals with disabilities (now those who began receiving this payment after May 1997) are organized their payments on different dates throughout the month and according to their date of birth. If you were born between the 1st and the 10th of any month, your payment will arrive every second Wednesday of the month you are in. For those born from the 11th to the 20th, it will arrive on the third Wednesday, and for those born in the last third of the month, that is, from the 21st to the 31st, their payments will arrive every fourth Wednesday of the month.
For what reasons could my payments be delayed?
Although the SSA has a very well-defined calendar, if the payment day falls on a weekend or a national holiday (as is the case this December, we will explain it to you now), the SSA decides to change the payment issue date to a day earlier so that the check does not suffer delays. So, that is what will happen on December 25, which, being a national holiday, they will advance the payment to the 24th, when both banks and the Postal Service are open.
So, yes, the payment will arrive on December 24 (which is not considered a holiday) and it will be the payment that belongs to those born between the 21st and 31st of each month (beneficiaries after May 1997). In this way, the SSA guarantees that, on such important dates as these, payments do not suffer delays.
Are there any other changes this December?
As with the 25th, do you know what other day is also a holiday? January 1st. And what does this day fall on? Wednesday! So, the SSA will repeat the same process with the SSI payment, and it will be distributed the day before, the last day of the year, December 31st (which will make December have “one more payment”, which really corresponds to the first payment of the year 2025 for SSI beneficiaries).
Information to keep in mind
Remember that due to national holidays, the US Social Security offices will also be closed on key Christmas dates! (such as December 25 and January 1). So, if you need someone to help you on this day, there will not be in-person service available, but you will have to check your paperwork through the website. Don’t worry because it works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
If you need additional help, you will have to wait until after New Year’s or until December 26.
We also remind you that the SSA is going to start implementing a new appointment system, which will begin on January 6, 2025. Therefore, you will have to make your appointment for the office online. This does not mean that people without an appointment cannot access the offices, but that they will have to wait (longer than the usual wait), since those who already have an appointment will have priority. In other words, if you need to access a Social Security office, the best thing you can do is request your appointment online and avoid the waiting line.
