Cybertruck is back in the headlines. In this case, it’s because an owner of one of these vehicles in Arizona, Ryan Patch, took it to the shop to investigate why it wasn’t charging at home. Tesla determined that it was necessary to replace the main high-voltage battery, a part that costs tens of thousands of dollars…

Although the repair is covered by the 8-year or 150,000-mile warranty, the story has generated debate among Cybertruck users. How reliable is this vehicle?

What was wrong with this Cybertruck?

Let’s start the story from the beginning. This man was experiencing problems with home charging, so he went to a shop thinking the problem could be the supercharger, which was 6 years old and he thought might be failing.

But he realized there was a serious problem with his vehicle when he tried another charger… and it didn’t accept the charge either.

Surprise at the shop

But after taking it to Tesla’s service center, the Tesla team left him without a car for over a week and finally gave him the news: the 800-volt high-voltage battery had to be replaced. This is an essential part that not only powers the motor but also the entire electrical system of the vehicle.

Of course, the protagonist of this story was shocked by the diagnosis… do you know how much one of those batteries costs?

Warranty… but with doubts

It didn’t cost him anything! Tesla fully covered the cost under its warranty, and to compensate for the waiting time, they provided Ryan with a newer Cybertruck loaner with a limit of 200 miles per day.

Ryan shared his experience in the Cybertruck Owners Only group on Facebook, thanking them for the speed and quality of the replacement vehicle but also expressing frustration: his car has been in the shop for an entire month, with several completion dates postponed…

Mixed opinions about Cybertruck

The story generated mixed reactions: some Cybertruck owners praised Tesla’s service as “quick and reliable” but others like Tom Slinger expressed concern about the overall reliability of the vehicle. “I’m about to pick up my Cybertruck and I can’t afford a failure like this…” said Tom, reflecting the doubts of many potential buyers.

What does this battery replacement mean?

Well, Ryan was very lucky because he didn’t pay anything, but the case highlights the importance of having an efficient service centre and the advantage of Tesla’s warranty.

Of course, it also raises questions about the actual durability of high-voltage batteries in these new electric models… and the Cybertrucks aren’t exactly cheap for them to fail at this level…

And their repairs even less…

How much does a battery replacement cost?

Hold on, because one of these batteries can cost between $20,000 and $25,000… depending on the labour and adjustments the vehicle needs. That’s why we say Ryan was very lucky, because it was covered by the warranty and he could save that outrageous amount of money… Imagine if he couldn’t afford that money and the warranty didn’t cover it…

How does Tesla’s warranty work?

Well, maybe you didn’t know this information, but Tesla offers one of the most generous warranties in the industry for its batteries: 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. It covers battery replacement if there are manufacturing defects or damage that affects vehicle performance.

But watch out, it doesn’t cover accidental damage, misuse, or inadequate performance, so you have to be careful! Ryan was very lucky, but that doesn’t always happen…

Good customer service is important and of course, having a warranty that covers the problems is a plus, but Cybertruck continues to generate problems both inside and outside the shops, and that’s even though it’s no longer in its initial phase…
