Mazda is not going through its best moment, especially now that it has had to recall more than 12,000 units of its iconic MX-5 Miata. Of course, this has been a cold shower for the automotive sector and for the thousands and thousands of drivers who, without knowing it, were driving a roadster that wasn’t working properly.

Mazda suggests the recall after detecting a fault in the DSC software and registers the recall through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and although no accidents have been reported yet… We need to be careful. Want to know more?

What the Mazda recall involves

The fault comes from the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), a part that coordinates yaw sensors, lateral acceleration, and steering wheel position. This system is the one that warns drivers when the vehicle loses grip. In these cars, that system doesn’t work and misinterprets the data, so it doesn’t activate the lights on the instrument panel. This system has an algorithm error supplied by the Japanese division of Bosch Corporation, and since there’s no visual alert, the driver could continue accelerating on a wet curve or slippery surface, trusting an assistance system that’s not actually intervening…

Mazda detected this anomaly during internal validation tests at the beginning of 2025 and halted the production of the affected Miatas until a solution was found.

Which vehicle is subject to recall?

The recall involves 12,244 units produced between December 19, 2023 and February 28, 2025 at the Hiroshima plant. It affects both Roadster and Retractable Fastback (RF) body styles from model years 2024 and 2025, in all trim levels: Sport, Club, Grand Touring, and the 35th Anniversary Edition.

The danger behind the software failure

Electronic stability has become a safety standard as important as airbags, so when the system fails (and so silently), the risk increases exponentially…

The error doesn’t deactivate the assistance; it simply prevents the driver from knowing something is wrong, so imagine now in situations of aquaplaning or slippery areas… The lack of warning can delay the reaction and turn a controllable scare into a serious accident.

What the repair will be like

Mazda has opted for a software update that reprograms the DSC and restores the alert management so it works properly. Also, no new parts are needed for this fix, but a specific diagnostic tool is required, and it’s not yet available across the entire North American dealership network. You’ll have to wait, stay patient!

Notification schedule and phases

Mazda will send the first notice — “No parts available” — starting July 21, 2025, informing owners that their vehicle is included in the campaign but cannot yet be serviced. The second letter will arrive when the selected dealership has the tools and certified software available. But surely before the second quarter of 2026, your car will be as good as new!

What should owners do?

If you drive a 2024-2025 MX-5 Miata, the first step is to check your VIN on the NHTSA portal or contact your dealership. With your 17-digit number, the system will confirm if your unit is subject to the Mazda MX-5 Miata recall.

If you notice strange behaviour in your vehicle, such as sudden skidding, a feeling of loss of traction, or anything similar, slow down and take your car to the shop as soon as possible for an inspection.

The brand has stressed that driving the vehicle is not dangerous, but you need to be aware that the car won’t warn you if there are errors!
