A girl found a stone that wasn’t really a stone… Picture this: you’re enjoying a warm, sunny day at the beach, walking along the shore, when something in the sand catches your eye. It’s a random stone — nothing too special, but kind of interesting. So, like most people might do, you pick it up and take it home as a little reminder of your day.

That’s exactly what happened to a young girl in Spain. She was spending time at a beach on the Costa Brava, in Girona — a beautiful stretch of coast in the northeast of the country. While wandering the shore, she came across a stone that stood out. It wasn’t glowing or anything, but it caught her attention enough for her to want to keep it. She picked it up, popped it in her bag, and brought it back home with her.

At the time, no one thought anything of it. The stone looked completely normal — just another beach souvenir, like a shell or a bit of sea glass. But as time would tell, this stone hid something…

The girl takes the stone home and time does its thing

Once they went back home from a nice day at the beach, the girl kept the stone as another regular object. However, after a few months, the stone began to change…

As often happens with natural objects — especially those that have been exposed to air, temperature changes, and maybe even some humidity — the stone started to wear down. Cracks began to appear. It wasn’t anything dramatic at first, just small changes that were easy to miss. The stone had been sitting in the house for almost a year, probably on a shelf or a desk, when the real surprise finally came to light.

One day, the girl’s mom noticed something strange. The stone had broken enough to reveal something inside. And what she saw was definitely not just part of the rock. It was metal. Not just any metal — something that looked like it didn’t belong in a beach stone at all.

Inside the stone, completely hidden until it wore down, was a grenade. A real, full-on grenade.

The mother acts fast and calls the police

The moment she realized what she was looking at, the girl’s mom did exactly what anyone should do in that situation: she called for help. She dialed 112 — Spain’s emergency number — and told the authorities what was going on.

Soon after, officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, responded to the call. When they arrived and confirmed it really was a grenade, they contacted their Tedax unit — the division that deals with explosives. These are the professionals trained to safely remove and handle bombs, grenades, and other dangerous devices. They carefully took the grenade away, making sure that no one was harmed and the area was safe.

A surprising ending  and a serious reminder

After the incident, the Mossos d’Esquadra shared the story on their social media to let people know what had happened. The goal wasn’t to scare anyone, but to raise awareness. The truth is, sometimes things that look completely harmless — like a random stone on the beach — can hide something much more dangerous underneath.

In this case, a curious moment on a family beach day turned into a situation no one could have expected. Thankfully, the mom acted quickly, and the professionals knew exactly what to do. This should be a reminder that you should be careful when taking something home, you never know what it really is. Have you ever experienced anything similar as the girl did?
