Amazon has just confirmed the definitive closure of its Appstore for Android on August 20, 2025, after 14 years of service. And this is not the only news that Bezos’ company has for us, the Amazon Coins program will also disappear, but do not worry because they have promised to refund the remaining credit of users who still had money inside the platform.

Of course this has not seemed logical or normal at all to the users who had both apps downloaded because since last August 20 there will be no guarantee that they will continue working. The recommendation is that you migrate to Google Play and delete any trace of other apps to avoid vulnerabilities… you know.

Why is Amazon closing its Appstore on Android?

The Amazon Appstore was born in 2011 as an alternative to Google Play, offering apps, games and purchases with exclusive discounts for Amazon customers. For years it was the main platform on Kindle Fire devices and also expanded to Android. But the passage of time has taken its toll and it has fallen to the great dominance of Google and its Play Store.

Everything has a strategy

Amazon has explained that this decision responds to the need to concentrate resources on the devices where its store is really used, that is, the Fire. In this way, the company admits that most users were no longer downloading applications from Android, so it was something absurd to keep this service if no one was using it anymore, don’t you think?

What will happen with the subscriptions?

They have assured that anyone who had money in the Amazon Coins wallet and had not spent it will receive it as a refund after August 20, although it has not yet been detailed how the procedure will be or what the deadlines will be for the money to reach us. We will have to arm ourselves with patience and wait for our money to arrive soon!

Subscriptions on Fire devices

Yes, those who have active subscriptions on Fire TV or Fire Tablet will be able to continue using them without problem, thank goodness. There is also the option of canceling them and requesting a proportional refund, here you will have to make the decision that suits you best. In the case of Android, Amazon itself recommends that you migrate your data to Google Play as soon as possible so as not to lose access to content.

Consequences for Android users

The giant has warned that, after the closure, applications downloaded from its Appstore on Android could stop working or present errors, ouch. In addition, keeping them installed may pose a security risk, since they will not receive updates or support and anyone could access the data… And if that happens, you will be the only one responsible for your data loss.

What does Amazon recommend?

What we have already said, uninstall the applications downloaded from its store and replace them with those that are in the Google Play catalog, these will indeed receive updates and will continue to be encrypted so that your data has no risk at all.

The closure of the Amazon Appstore on Android marks the end of an era, leaving behind more than a decade in which it tried to compete with Google Play. But perhaps we should stop looking at the past and understand that when things do not work it is better to leave them behind and look at the horizon, now Amazon wants to change strategy and will bet only on the Fire system.

For users, the priority now is to migrate their applications and wait for their money back from the Amazon Coins! And start over again!
