2025 has arrived and with it the new Social Security calendar for this year! For many, it is essential to know when their payments will arrive in order to organize their year and their monthly resources. This year, in addition, it comes with a 2.5% adjustment of the COLA, now we explain well what it is, let’s get started!
How is Social Security organized to send its payments?
Everything will depend on what type of benefit you are going to receive and when you were born. The SSA sends everything in a staggered manner, so that there is no delay in receiving any payment.
Depending on the type of beneficiary, the payments are as follows:
- For Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries, payments are made on the first day of each month. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday, they are advanced to the previous business day.
- People who began receiving benefits before May 1997 receive their payments on the third day of each month.
For other beneficiaries, such as retirees and people with disabilities, payments are made on Wednesdays according to the date of birth:
- Born between the 1st and the 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
- Born between the 11th and the 20th: third Wednesday of the month.
- Born between the 21st and the 31st: fourth Wednesday of the month.
If any of these dates coincide with a national holiday, payment is made in advance to the previous business day.
How will the COLA impact these payments?
As you already know, this COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) is a percentage that is added to Social Security payments in the inflation situation we are in, so that the Administration ensures that the purchasing power of the beneficiaries is not affected. This year, the percentage that is added will be 2.5%, far from other years when it has been higher. This means that little by little we are entering economic normality again (Finally!!!)
The average payments for 2025 with this added adjustment are as follows:
- For individual retirees: $1,976 per month.
- For retired couples where both receive benefits: $3,089 per month.
- For people with disabilities and their families: $2,826 per month.
