7Up is a very popular soft drink around the world, we all know its refreshing flavor and its different sugar-free versions. However, this brand is the protagonist of this article because it had to issue a recall of 23,000 cans of 7Up Tropical Zero Sugar. Why? Because what consumers found inside was the sugar version drink. Of course, this mistake alarmed people, mostly those suffering from diabetes or those avoiding sugar because of health or diet reasons. So, let’s find out more about this new recall case.

7Up Tropical Zero Sugar

The company informed people that some cans of this drink were accidentally filled with the normal soft drink of the brand containing sugar. On the outside, you could see they were labelled as ‘’Zero Sugar’’, but on the inside you would have been drinking totally the opposite.

Due to this mistake, 7Up issued a recall with the support of the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).

Where did this mistake happen?

The 7Up recall affected consumers in 3 states of the U.S.: Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. The thing was that the cans’ expiring date was March of 2026, so they could have been out in the market available for people to buy them if this hadn’t been detected at the right time.

How serious is this recall?

The FDA classified the 7Up recall as Class II, which means the consumption of the product could provoke temporary or irreversible health issues – even though it wasn’t considered a deadly threat.

Still, for people with diabetes, who need to avoid sugar, or those who are on a strict diet, drinking these soft drinks (by mistake) could be risky.

What you, as a consumer, should do

YUp and the FDA have provided some clear instructions for consumers, so let’s see what they have to tell us:

  • Check 7Up Tropical Zero Sugar cans if you bought them in Alabama, Florida or Georgia.
  • Look at the expiring date (March 2026).
  • If the cans belong to the recall, do not drink them.
  • Return them to the place where you bought them to get a refund or a replacement.

Apart from all of this, you can also do the following:

  • Go to the official FDA website to get more information
  • Call 7Up’s toll-free number (1-800-696-5891), which is available from Monday to Friday during business hours.

7Up’s response to this issue

The company stated that it is warning retailers and clients to recall the affected cans as soon as possible. Also, it highlighted that, for now, nobody has reported diseases or harm related to this mistake.

7Up clarified that it’s actively working to avoid these types of mistakes ever happening again. Although the company is not facing any lawsuits over this recall, it’s true 7Up is currently involved in a class action lawsuit because of advertising claims about “100% natural flavors.”

Importance of this recall

What happened to the 7Up Tropical Zero Sugar cans might seem like a minor error, but cases like this show the importance of trusting labels on food and drinks. For most consumers, choosing a product like 7UP Zero Sugar is crucial for their health. So, making a simple production mistake can mean a real risk, and a huge impact on the brand’s reputation. Of course, now 7Up aims to solve this issue as soon as possible and prove its transparency to its consumers.

The question is whether we can still enjoy 7Up drinks. Sure, as long as we, as consumers, put into practice what we have learnt from this mistake: Be informed and cautious. Have you ever experienced anything similar with another product?
