Oh, oh… Ford has done it again, it has had to recall 1.45 million vehicles in our country and more than 100,000 in Canada. The reason for the recall is that the rearview cameras do not work. In some cases they do not turn on, in others they show inverted images and worse still, in others distorted images appear. If you have driven a car with one of these cameras you will know how important they are, especially when we have to park or get out of a parking space…
What vehicles are affected?
The measure includes several Ford and Lincoln models, take note because the list is long:
- Ford Mustang, Ranger, Edge, Expedition, Transit, Transit Connect, Econoline and the F-250 to F-550 pickups.
- Lincoln MKC and Lincoln Navigator.
The recall covers years from 2015 to 2019, that is why it is such a gigantic recall.
The problem
The problems with the camera have generated more than 44,000 warranty claims and at least 18 confirmed accidents, although without fatalities, which has made Ford finally alert with this problem to solve it once and for all.
And moreover, it is a recurring problem, yes, Ford has already had many problems with the same component, so it seems that the brand is not prepared to have rearview cameras in its vehicles…
In 2020, the company had already withdrawn more than 620,000 vehicles for similar defects, in 2022 they had to repeat the recall, and once again in 2024 adding more than 24,000 additional units.
NHTSA stepped in
Obviously, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) opened an investigation in 2021 to evaluate whether Ford was handling these problems quickly… And it does not seem that it was because last November, the brand agreed to pay a fine of 165 million dollars for delays in previous recalls… Ford, you are not handling it well.
What drivers should do
According to NHTSA’s report, Ford dealerships will inspect the rearview cameras and replace them free of charge in the affected vehicles. Owners are recommended to check on NHTSA’s official page or on Ford’s website if their car is included in the recall, and of course drivers will not have to pay anything. That said, it is recommended that they use the vehicles with caution, especially when parking.
And although it has not caused any deaths, it is a considerable risk, especially in the USA where there is also a law that establishes that rearview cameras have a maximum of two seconds to activate.
Not Ford’s year
As you may have seen, Ford has been suffering recalls for years, and in just these last years more than 150 have been added! Crazy just thinking about how this may have impacted consumer confidence…
Suppliers and other manufacturers
It is important to note that Canadian supplier Magna International also announced the withdrawal of more than 250,000 rearview cameras installed in Ford and Stellantis vehicles, which increases concern about the quality and reliability of this brand’s electronic components.
1.9 million vehicles are not few, and this marks one of the most important recalls in Ford’s history. Hopefully they can recover from this dark chapter.
