TSA does it again-issues strong warning on new shoe rule and its controversial exception

No more flying without valid documents in the US – the TSA will charge passengers without accepted identification a fee of around $50

Farewell to the Ford Focus—the Saarlouis plant manufactures the last unit, marking the end of an icon that millions dreamed of owning

The TSA confirms it—an iPhone or Android phone will be enough to pass through security checks at more than 250 airports thanks to the new Digital ID/ID Pass system—here’s how it works

Finally, after almost two decades, the TSA has removed one of the most hated rules in United States airports: it will no longer be mandatory to take off shoes at security checkpoints. Yesss! Finally! You celebrate it, we celebrate it and surely every person who is about to travel in the coming months. This 2025 has come full of many novelties for the TSA, but this one, specifically, is a relief for all of us who believe it is an old and uncomfortable trend. We do not want to take off our shoes and have to step on the cold airport floor… But be careful, because not all shoes escape this rule!

The origin of the rule

The obligation to take off shoes in airports was implemented after the failed attempt by Richard Reid, known as the “shoe bomber”, who in 2001 tried to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes during a flight… So, since 2006, taking off shoes became routine for all passengers, no matter what kind of footwear they wore.

Last July, the Department of Homeland Security finally announced the change, and now most travelers can pass through security filters with their shoes on… as long as they do not trigger any alert, if you trigger an alert, you will have to take them off, explosive test and maybe one or two more questions.

The warning

The TSA has explained that many types of footwear can still cause problems in scanners and force the passenger to take them off anyway, ouch. The most problematic shoes are:

  • Shoes with metal reinforcements, such as steel-toe boots or heels with internal pieces, that is, mostly safety shoes required in many jobs.
  • Footwear with thick or cushioned soles, those make difficult for detectors to read.

But, remember that in smaller airports, where older detection arches still operate, you may still have to take off your shoes.

Tips to not lose time at the checkpoint

Every passenger hates having to waste time in scanner, but you now know they can stop you because of a shoe. So we recommend you choosing the most comfortable option when traveling, simpler shoes, sneakers or even sandals if the weather is good. The TSA also reminds that random checks are still possible, even if there is no alarm, so be prepared!

Lisa Farbstein, TSA spokesperson, insists that passengers must keep the habit of arriving at least two hours in advance for domestic flights (three for international ones), since there can always be delays on high-traffic dates, that has not changed.

Other changes at the TSA

This year they have not stopped making modifications, from changing the prohibition list to considering the famous 100 ml rule… can you imagine if they finally eliminate it too?

The new advanced imaging scanners allow detection of materials without the need to ask passengers to remove so many clothes or accessories, it was about time, we live in the age of technology!

One more rule that goes down in history, yes, with its nuances. But most of you will be able to travel without worrying about tying or untying shoelaces at the security arch.

What changes for travelers

For many frequent passengers, those changes are a real relief, fewer lines, less stress and a much smoother travel experience. But remember that comfort also has limits, and if you set off the detector… Here comes the TSA agent’s check.

If you want to pass quickly through security, wear comfortable footwear without metals. And even if the experience is now somewhat more bearable, safety will still be above comfort. And have a good flight!
