Winter is coming, the cold is starting, and we all like to be warm at home. If you have an air conditioner, you know that it is the best solution (and the safest of course). But, have you ever wondered what you can do to prolong the life of this device? We are going to help you with some tips so that your air conditioner lasts much longer and you never have to call the technical service to fix it (and even less when it is very cold!

How does an air conditioner work in winter?

This device, which serves to provide both cold air in summer and hot air in winter, extracts air from outside, processes it and transfers it to the interior of the home, even when it is very, very cold, this device is able to continue its work. This process is possible thanks to the flow of refrigerant and the exchange of heat between the environment and the components of the equipment. But, when temperatures drop below 0º, the performance of the device decreases and it runs the risk of freezing.

Is it common for it to freeze?

And so much! Think that when it is very cold is when we use it the most (as well as when it is very hot). Especially when it is cold, humidity accumulates in the external heat exchanger (especially if we use it for a long time when it is very cold). This ice causes a blockage in the thermal exchange of the air, reducing its efficiency and generating the possibility of ending up damaging the fan blades. Now, many appliances come with an automatic defrost function that reverses the cycles and melts the accumulated ice, however, not all come with this advantage, so we are going to give you some tips so that you can take the best care of your air conditioner if it does not have this function.

How do I prolong the life of my air conditioner?

  1. A well-installed air conditioner is key for it to work without problems during the winter. It is important to leave at least 20-25 cm of free space around the external equipment, (so that the air circulates properly). You can also protect it by installing an awning or a small roof to prevent snow or ice falling from the roof from damaging or blocking it.
  2. Keep the unit clean, remove dirt, any autumn leaves, and check that the vents are free.
  3. If you live in a region with extreme winters, there are air conditioners designed exclusively for severe conditions. These models (known as “northern versions”) are equipped with materials and designs that improve their performance in sub-zero temperatures. Although they may be a little more expensive, their durability and efficiency make up for the investment!
  4. For homes in areas with mild winters, a standard air conditioner may be sufficient. Most modern models operate efficiently down to -5°C.
  5. If you want to save on your electricity bill, avoid setting your air conditioner to extreme temperatures. If you don’t live in a very cold place, it’s best to keep it between 20°C and 24°C because you don’t need more!
  6. If you have the low consumption option, take advantage of it! Many devices regulate, using this mode, the power according to the real needs of the place where it is installed, it will be better for you and your bill!

You know, no matter how cold it is outside, it is important to take care of your air conditioner at home (and outside!). Perform regular maintenance, consider the real temperature outside and clean it frequently. These are small tips that don’t cost us anything but with which we can make our devices last much longer, and, above all, now that the coldest temperatures of the year are coming. You certainly don’t want it to break now and have to heat yourself with an old stove!
