We love air fryers, they are probably one of the most popular appliances of recent years, and they are so easy to use, and you can make so many things (yes, pizza can also be made) that they have become a must-have in our kitchens. Now, the United States is facing a massive recall of one of the models of these devices due to fire risk, and they have to withdraw several thousand units of different brands, yes, a catastrophe.
What is happening?
The air fryer, our trusted appliance, is going through a rather dark chapter. It has been the Consumer Product Safety Commission that has ordered the recall after receiving several complaints about overheating, melted parts and even house fires…
No serious injuries have been reported, thank god, but authorities believe the problem is big enough to alert the millions of consumers who use one of these in their homes every day. So that is what they have done.
Air fryer, under the spotlight
Practical, lighter food (without so much fried or so much fat) and above all, faster to use (and they take up half the space of an oven, a sandwich maker and a toaster). But, some models are making headlines and have raised the concern of most consumers.
Not the first recall
Already in 2022, more than 700,000 units of several brands were withdrawn due to electrical failures that caused similar fires, among the most talked about cases, the brand Insignia (one of the most famous) recalled more than 280,000 fryers, sold mainly by Best Buy, after several users reported melted handles and risk of burns.
Back to 2024
At the beginning of this year, another brand had to recall 11,750 devices for similar defects. The pattern shows that the problem is not limited to one manufacturer, but affects different models in a booming market. Could it be the way these devices are made?
How these recalls affect consumers
Beyond the inconvenience of losing an essential appliance in many kitchens, recalls generate distrust, of course, nobody wants their kitchen to go up in flames, so to mitigate the effect, some companies have offered a 50 dollar voucher for the purchase of some models, but wait, if your device is included in a recall, the brand must offer you financial compensation or at least a replacement.
Precautions
Experts insist that users must follow certain measures to reduce risks:
- Do not overload the device.
- Keep it clean and ventilated.
- Register the product on the manufacturer’s website to receive possible alerts.
The future of air fryers
Despite these incidents, the market continues to grow, have you tried making cheesecake in the air fryer? Then you will thank us ;). Consumers continue betting on them due to their versatility: from potatoes and chicken to fish, vegetables and typical recipes of each country, we love air fryers!!!
Innovation and safety in development
Manufacturers are already working on new designs and technological improvements that seek to minimize risks. In the coming years, models with greater efficiency, more functions and advanced safety systems that prevent overheating are expected.
And the kitchen revolution is not spherifications or anything like that, it is being able to have an appliance that does everything! But yes, never forgetting that safety must be the main thing in every kitchen.
Cheesecake in air fryer
Ingredients
- 250 g of cream cheese
- 100 g of sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 100 ml of heavy cream (whipping cream)
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Maria type cookies (for the base)
- 50 g of melted butter
Step by step preparation
- Crush the cookies until you get a fine powder and mix them with the melted butter. Line the bottom of a small mold that fits in the air fryer with this mixture, pressing well so it is compact.
- In a bowl, beat the cream cheese with the sugar until the mixture is smooth.
- Add the eggs one by one, mixing well. Incorporate the cream, the cornstarch and the vanilla, beating until you get a homogeneous cream.
- Pour the mixture over the cookie base.
- Place the mold in the air fryer and cover it with aluminum foil. Cook at 160 ºC for 25-30 minutes. The center should remain slightly jiggly, since it will finish setting as it cools.
- Let it rest at least 2 hours before unmolding.
You can serve it as is, creamy and classic, or give it a plus with red fruit jam, caramel or a layer of melted chocolate. yummy!
