We are now one step closer to complete digitalization, and California customers can now add their state ID, driver’s license, or Real ID to Apple Wallet on their iPhone, so they can carry all their documents on their phone or Apple Watch to be identified at all times without the need to carry a large wallet.
This is all part of the DMV’s mobile license (mDL) program, which is making a titanic effort to modernize digital credentials to make everything much more convenient for us.
How do I add my Real ID to my Apple Watch?
- First, open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the + button and select “Driver’s License or State ID.”
- Scan the physical license using the iPhone camera.
- You’ll need to take a selfie to verify your identity.
- Complete the authentication process with guided facial gestures.
Once approved by the California DMV, the digital ID will be ready to use on your Apple devices!
Where can I use my Apple Wallet ID?
Carrying your ID on your phone, even if it’s digital, works just like a physical ID, so you can use it at airports and businesses where it’s required. You can also use it at TSA checkpoints at select airports.
You can use it to pick up orders and get assistance at Genius Bar and supported apps and services like Uber Eats, MyChart, and Turo.
Just hold your iPhone or Apple Watch up, approve the request with Face ID or Touch ID, and confirm the shared details. There’s no need to unlock or hand over your device.
Is it safe?
As safe or safer than your iPhone. Apple has implemented extraordinary security measures to protect users, such as data encryption that Apple cannot even access, biometric authentication (your face or fingerprint) every time you use it and your security cannot be traced by Apple or the State of California.
Can it only be used in California?
- No, Real ID on Apple devices is already being used in other states such as Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland and Ohio.
- And soon, other states such as Montana, New Mexico and West Virginia will also adopt this measure.
- At an international level, Japan will also soon integrate it.
What is a digital ID?
A digital ID is an electronic version of a physical identity document, such as a driver’s license, passport or ID card that is stored on electronic devices, such as mobile phones or watches, allowing users to verify their identity quickly and securely.
They are very convenient because you can choose what information to share in each case and they are more difficult to falsify
Will they replace physical cards?
For now, no, digital IDs are on the rise, but it will still be mandatory to have one physically, basically because your mobile phone will not last forever and can be stolen or run out of battery and how would you identify yourself then? Despite everything, this is an effort to create a more digitalized society and above all, a safe one, since there are many hackers out there.
For us digital beings, everything is moving towards a more convenient world where we only have one device to carry everything, so California, you are in luck for now and you will be able to carry your ID with you at all times!
