The Hiccapop PlayPad is a mattress designed for use in portable playpens, baby beds. Its purpose is to provide a more comfortable surface for babies to sleep or play on inside the playpen, offering additional padding compared to the standard mattresses that usually come with these products. Its foldable design and ease of transport made it an attractive option for many parents looking to improve the comfort of their little ones. However, although in theory the PlayPad promised more comfort and support, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall order for these products due to their extreme danger, so if you have one of these at home, do not hesitate to continue reading.
The CPSC warning
Apparently, these mattresses, especially the Hiccapop PlayPad model HP-TPM-2, represent a serious risk of suffocation for babies and their recommendation is clear: stop using them and remove them immediately.
The problem is that these mattresses do not meet federal standards for thickness or dimensions for this type of playpen, which creates a dangerous space between the mattress and the wall of the playpen that could, in a very unfortunate situation, cause the baby’s face to become trapped and prevent him from breathing, which would cause a serious risk of suffocation.
Which mattress models are affected?
The recalled mattresses were manufactured by Keezio Group LLC, a California-based company doing business as Hiccapop.
More than 108,000 units were sold on platforms such as Amazon.com between March and November 2024. The affected products are those labeled as:
- Brand: Hiccapop PlayPad
- Model: HP-TPM-2
- Manufacture date: September 22, 2022 or later
- Dimensions: 37.5 inches x 26.5 inches
- Origin: Made in China
The manufacturer washes its hands
That’s right, Keezio Group LLC has not accepted the error or withdrawn these mattresses despite the seriousness of the situation, because, according to the CPSC, some babies have suffocated due to these mattresses. The manufacturer has not even offered a solution to consumers, so the CPSC has been forced to issue a notice of violation against the company for not complying with safety standards and putting the lives of so many babies at risk.
Any recommendations from the CPSC?
Yes, the first thing the CPSC has recommended is that consumers stop using these mattresses and throw them away. They recommend not buying them, selling them, or even giving them away because of their dangerousness.
Furthermore, they have recommended using only the original mattress that comes with the playpen or one that meets the exact measurements specified by the manufacturer and avoiding the use of additional fillings, thick blankets or pillows inside it.
They also urge you to report any type of incident or problem related to these mattresses on the official CPSC website (which you can access by clicking here)
The safety of our little ones is one of the most important things and, of course, our priority. Even though the manufacturer has not been able to take measures or accept their mistake, the easiest way for us, parents or caregivers, is to avoid using these mattresses in our homes.
