Under the Bermuda Triangle there is something that should not be there, and the most mysterious place on the planet, the one that holds the most legends, has a secret. It is not the planes, the lost ships, or the crazy compasses, but rather that beneath Bermuda there is a geological structure that no one had ever seen before and that does not resemble anything else on Earth.
About 50 kilometers below the island, researchers have identified a huge layer of rock up to 20 kilometers thick that should not be there. What could it be?
A discovery
An international team was analyzing seismic waves from distant earthquakes, vibrations that travel through the subsurface. A seismic station installed in Bermuda began to record something strange, something that did not seem logical to the researchers. The waves, which normally follow fairly predictable paths, were abruptly deflected just as they passed beneath the island, as if they were hitting something. But given that this is the strangest place on the planet, maybe that was not so surprising.
A layer of rock
By reconstructing the path of those waves, the researchers came across a rock structure much thicker than normal, located between the crust and the Earth’s mantle, and less dense than the material around it. Something that does not fit with geological logic, which is oceanic crust and mantle.
But in Bermuda it is different. There is an extra intermediate layer, as if someone had added an extra floor to the building. William Frazar, a seismologist at Carnegie Science, confirmed that this discovery breaks classic geological models.
An ancient volcano?
It could be. It is the most logical explanation they have found, because it is also known that the last major eruption occurred about 31 million years ago, approximately, since no one was there to see it. That volcanic activity would have filled the crust with magma, which then solidified and formed a rocky “raft” trapped beneath the island.
An island pushed from below
Being less dense, that rocky mass acts like a giant float and pushes upward, which causes Bermuda to be elevated about 500 meters above the ocean floor. Could this be the explanation for why radars go crazy here?
Seismic waves give it away
That difference in density alters the speed and direction of seismic waves, leaving a very clear signature in the records. Thanks to this, they have been able to study it without drilling anything.
Another mystery for Bermuda
It does not explain the disappearances or the possibility of space time holes in the area, but it does make it clear that Bermuda is geologically unique, do you not think?
