January is back with all the payments made by the Administration, and the new year can bring with it many expectations but also many worries. Especially for those who depend on these types of programs, it is important to know when and how these benefits will arrive in order to plan expenses within the family. So if you are wondering what will happen with CalWORKs this year, stay tuned and we will explain it to you.

What is CalWORKs?

It is called California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), it is a system that guarantees California families financial help so they can meet their basic needs through small monthly payments.

When are these payments made?

CalWORKs is usually issued between the first and third day of the month. This January, since the 1st falls on a national holiday, the benefits will have reached families on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 (so that no family experiences a delay in their payment).

How is this payment deposited?

CalWORKs payments are made through direct deposit or through Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards.

How do EBT cards work?

Very simple, these allow you to access ATMs and make purchases in stores that are part of these programs (such as SNAP credit or other food stamps), this means that they cannot be used in all stores but in specific stores.

Who can apply for CalWORKs?

This program is available to individuals and families who meet specific requirements:

  1. Having a child in the home who is not cared for by one or both parents (either due to absence, disability, or death)
  2. Unemployed parents
  3. Relatives of caregivers of a foster child.

The amount of money that corresponds to each family will depend on the specific needs of each individual in the household and the family income in each home.

How can I apply for CalWORKs for the first time?

To apply for the CalWORKs program, you must complete an online application or go to a local social services office to begin the process. You will need to present documents that verify income, residence, and family situation, and finally, you must undergo an interview to determine whether or not you will be selected to participate in the program.

What if my payment has not arrived?

You must make sure that your banking information is up to date. If you cannot find the reason why your payment has been delayed, you will need to contact the California Department of Social Services and report the problem so they can help you resolve it as quickly as possible.

Are there other services available?

Yes, beyond monthly payments, CalWORKs also provides job training for family members to assist them in their job search, they also offer financial advice and support in public health programs.

As we can see, this program is more than just giving money, it is a system that helps families overcome economic obstacles and accompanies them in their growth process. This year, beneficiaries can rest assured that they will continue receiving their payments as usual.
