Green Card holders, this is for you! The Ohio state is in works to implement a new law which will bann some foreigners and Green Card holders from buying properties in some parts of the state. The situation for Green Card holders is getting more strict and difficult and this is another issue they will have to face. If you belong to this community, you shoul keep reading to know more in depth what’s going on.
A new law coming from the Ohio state
Currently, there is a debate in Ohio about a new law that is though to add another imposition on immigrant people. They won’t be allowed to buy any land or property near places like military bases, airports or specific infrastructures.
The immigrants affected are the Green Card holders who already live in Ohio – they will have the right to keep their properties bought before this law – and citizens from ‘enemy’ countries of the United States such as China, Russia, Iran and North Corea.
Who are Green Card Holders?
A Green Card, also known as Permanent Resident Card, is a permission for foreign people that allows them to live and work permanently in the U.S.A. However, not every immigrant is valid to own a Green Card and there are many categories for you to apply for it, depending on your situation: victim of abuse, refugee, employment and family, among many others.
Ohio and its reasons
Nowadays, the United States are implementing new regulations claiming they are looking for national security. Recently, we could see the implantation of the Real ID with the same reason behind it, and now it’s Ohio’s law turn.
They fear foreigners may use their lands as a place to sabotage America, so this law will be a prevention method to avoid the increase of these types of activities against the country. They bear in mind the many Chinese companies in the U.S. which make Americans feel suspicious about their real purposes, for exampple, in 2022, a Chinese company bought a land near a North Dakota Airbase
Affected people’s take on this issue
Many of the American citizens are legal immigrants that make use of their Green Cards and they feel lost and confused about situations like this. There is a sense of discrimination among immigrants in America because they are living in this country in a legal way, but they keep living with fear since some day they may lose everything they have achieve here.
International vision about the U.S.A
Well, the intention to implement this law has spread to other states like Florida and Texas, which are implementing restrictions affecting immigrant people on their properties too. This may cause a negative image about the United States in other countries.
Also, the U.S.A could face a reduction of legal immigrant people going to their country which might translate into less international talented people who provide many technological advances or even contribute to the education system.
Legal immigrants life
We have been witnessing this tension for many years, immigrant arriving to the United States to start a new life while American citizens are afraid of the trouble they could cause to their services and their security.
We’ll see how this new law develops, but, one thing is for sure, Green Card holders will be at risk all the time, no matter all the requirements they have to match nor the prejudices the have to face on their daily life.
Do you think is fair that legal immigrants, who have shown their documents and their purposes to live in the U.S., have to be the ones paying the price for a tension between countries?
