Now that we are all experts in geopolitics, it is time to talk about oil, but this time not the oil from Venezuela, but the one in the Gulf of Mexico, which for many years was the epicenter of North American oil.

But now the story is starting to change, and not because the U.S. now controls Venezuelan oil, but because times are changing and Mexico is taking advantage of its location to bet on energy from the sea, which is clean and constant. Think about it, it is movement, it is silent, it never stops and you do not need anything polluting, in principle, to obtain energy. We are talking about marine energy generated by its currents, a resource so natural that it is beginning to rewrite the way energy is extracted not only in Mexico, but all over the world.

The sea is no longer just beautiful, now it is also useful

For years we have looked at the sea to see how beautiful it was or what we could extract from it to feed ourselves, but the reality is that we missed that the sea could be a stable source of energy. The sea is always moving.

Now, scientists have studied what the currents of the Gulf of Mexico are like, especially in a very specific area, and they have found that they have exceptional strength and regularity. And the best thing about this type of energy is that it does not depend at all on the weather.

The Cozumel Channel

This is exactly where the key point to extract this resource is located, between the Cozumel Channel and the Yucatan Peninsula. There seems to be a marine channel where the currents flow with more power than in other places, and this could generate energy 24/7. What no one expected is that the figures place it among one of the most promising areas on the planet and it could become a global strategy.

How is movement turned into electricity?

Underwater, on the seabed, turbines similar to windmills would be placed, but instead of moving with the wind, they move with water currents. When they spin, they generate energy, and that energy would reach cities through cables. All of this would happen many meters deep, far from beaches or tourists. It would have no visual impact, perhaps this is the most important thing, and it would not alter the landscape. They would be working without bothering anyone.

Constant energy, not intermittent

And that is the most attractive thing about this type of energy. The sea does not depend on the sun or weather conditions to work like solar panels or traditional wind turbines. The sea never turns off, hopefully. So it is a very valuable system for any system, do you not think? Currents do not understand cloudy nights or windless days. That means stable supply forever, something very valuable in any electrical system.

And the environment?

One of the key questions, of course. According to experts, the ecological impact is minimal. Being at great depths, the turbines do not interfere with fishing, tourism or marine life. They are supposed to make no noise and above all, they do not emit pollutants. Real clean energy.

A historic opportunity for Mexico

While many countries are looking for alternatives, Mexico has a natural advantage right there, under the sea, and it would be a way to stop depending on oil. In addition, the UN expects Mexico to become a reference in ocean energy throughout Latin America.

From burning to flowing

For decades, the Gulf was exploited for what it hid underground, but today there is another way to find energy without extracting or burning anything. Now energy will flow constantly and cleanly. A treasure hidden under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
