For centuries, Loch Ness has been a real protagonist, not only because of its natural beauty, but also because one of the most enigmatic creatures in history appears every now and then, or so they say. We are talking, of course, about the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately called Nessie. This creature, which we do not know if it is a giant snake, a lizard, a dinosaur or a dragon, seems to be seen from time to time sailing in the waters of this lake. Surely you also have in mind the image of a solitary beast sailing through the dark waters, as this same story has fuelled fishermen’s tales, medieval chronicles and even scientific expeditions! Nessie is already an almost legendary character, whose story has been told in documentaries, books and films. Each new sighting renews the mystery and fuels the question: is it real or just a collective illusion?
In the year 2025, the mystery of Loch Ness is as alive as ever. A new sighting has caught the attention of the media and enthusiasts of the myth, after an anonymous witness handed over a photograph to the Loch Ness Centre in Drumnadrochit. The image shows a black mass sliding beneath the waters… Nessie, are you there?
What was the first sighting of Nessie?
The first reference to a creature in Loch Ness dates back to 565 AD, when Irish missionary St Columba claimed to have seen a large beast sinking into the water. However, the modern myth was popularised in 1933, when a couple reported seeing a creature gliding across the surface of the loch. Since then, thousands of people have reported sightings, with none ever confirmed, making the loch a must-see for all travellers to Scotland.
And the new image?
The latest photograph, captured under perfect weather conditions, has been described as “one of the clearest in years”. Nagina Ishaq, a spokesperson for the Loch Ness Centre, said that this sighting “could be our first significant clue of the year, further fuelling the mystery of Loch Ness”.
Despite the excitement that each new report of Nessie generates, the scientific community remains unsatisfied…
What does the technology say?
For decades, numerous research teams have tried to solve the mystery with cutting-edge tools, including underwater sonar, to detect large moving bodies, drones with thermal cameras, which can see activity underwater, and even environmental DNA analysis, to detect traces of unknown species in the lake.
So far, none of these searches have found convincing evidence of the existence of a large creature in Loch Ness.
So, there is no Nessie?
Some scientists claim that Nessie’s alleged appearances may be due to natural phenomena, such as waves generated by ships, reflections of light on the water or otters. But the mystery remains firm and many actually believe that Nessie lurks in the deep, dark waters of Loch Ness.
Ishaq confirmed that, as always, they are very committed to solving the mystery of Nessie once and for all, and that all previous collaborations have allowed them to make significant progress in the investigation. This possible sighting is a reminder that the mystery of Loch Ness is far from solved.
Some of us, who are fanciful, continue to believe that beneath the waters of that lake there is a great creature that navigates those waters, and that, from time to time, in some absent-mindedness, it lets itself be seen. Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense that those spots and dark figures only appear in that lake, right? It’s not that it doesn’t exist, it’s that it is very good at hiding!
Whether it exists or not, Loch Ness remains one of the most incredible places (along with the Bermuda Triangle) around the world, and, as long as nothing says otherwise, we will continue to wait for new news and images of our favourite creature!
