Health is one of the most important things we have in life. And in this context, it is so crucial to have a medical insurance that works as you deserve. For this reason, Medicare stands out as one of the best options for people, and, more specifically, for retirees. But, be careful because it also can bring more than one surprise if you are not aware about what your program includes and what it doesn’t… Even the system covers main important services, there are still some basic necessities from our daily routine that may be not included in your program. This Is what we fear about, because it can be understood as many unexpected bills that you will have to pay directly from your pockets…

That’s why we are here today, to inform and guide you about your health insurance and what are you paying for this 2025. Because you need to understand where the gaps are to make the best decisions about your health, or at least to adjust your plan to fit your personal financial situation!

What Medicare is?

Medicare is a federal health public insurance, it is mainly destined to our retirees (over 65, more on less), even it can be accessible for people with disabilities or serious health conditions (for example, renal failure or similar). It is not full free, and, of course, it is not full cover, but it is a good option for those who have not enough money to pay a private insurance or other plans.

It is divided in many parts:

  • Part A: Covers hospital stays, care in skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health services. It is usually free if you have worked and paid enough in taxes.
  • Part B: Covers medical services, doctor visits, outpatient care, and some supplies. It has a monthly cost.
  • Part C (Medicare advantage): These are plans offered by private insurers that combine coverage from Part A and B, and often include extras like dental, vision, or hearing.
  • Part D: Covers prescription drugs. It is also offered by private insurers.

Dental care

One of the most evident gaps is still dental care. Cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, or bridges are not covered by Medicare unless they are linked to another medical procedure.

The problem? The prices are anything but friendly. A single crown can cost between $800 and $2,500, and a dental implant can easily run into several thousand. Without extra dental insurance, these expenses can be unaffordable.

Vision, not included either:

Medicare does cover certain serious vision problems, like cataract surgery or diabetic eye exams, but when it comes to routine checkups or getting new glasses or contact lenses, that’s not covered.
So if you have vision problems, like many of us do, you’ll have to pay out of pocket.

Hearing aids

Hearing loss is pretty common with age, but traditional Medicare doesn’t cover hearing tests or the hearing aids themselves. Only some Medicare Advantage plans offer help in this area.

And in case you were wondering: a new pair of hearing aids can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $7,000. And that doesn’t include follow-up visits or adjustments.

Travelling abroad? Extra insurance

If you’re leaving the United States, here’s something you need to know: Medicare covers almost nothing outside the country. Only in very specific situations. And a medical emergency abroad can cost you thousands of dollars. That’s why many people get travel insurance or look for Medigap plans that include international coverage.

Long-term care

Medicare doesn’t cover daily assistance services for people who need help with basic activities like dressing, bathing, or eating. It only includes short stays in rehabilitation centres after certain hospitalizations.

And of course, this kind of care is incredibly expensive: a private room in a nursing home costs over $120,000 a year. And if we’re talking about in-home help, you’re looking at around $7,000 a month.

What can you do to prepare?

Look into other coverage: Medigap or Medicare Advantage

If it’s within your budget, consider a supplemental plan like Medigap or a Medicare Advantage plan. Some of them include services that traditional Medicare doesn’t cover, like dental, vision, or hearing aids.

Healthcare shouldn’t be a business, but unfortunately, that’s how the system works. Try to choose the option that fits you best so you can enjoy retirement peacefully, or at least with fewer expenses.
