The United States has a weight problem. And talking about weight is neither comfortable nor pleasant for anyone, but it is a reality. We lead the world in childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases derived from excess weight, and that is why the MAHA movement (“Make America Healthy Again”) wants to change this trend, so it has turned the nutritional pyramid upside down.
And it is that repeating the same message no longer works and the pyramid has become outdated: grains at the base, proteins at the top, and consuming sugars “in moderation” (it is never in moderation). They have presented a new dietary guide to avoid ultra-processed and industrial products. It is time for everything to change.
The country needs to change
We are not talking only about the pyramid itself, but about the habits we have here. Millions of people have believed for years that pasta, cereals, or bread should be the base of every meal, and that only meant adding carbohydrates to our diet.
The change comes in the pyramid. At the very top appear proteins and vegetables, to show that they are the most important part of each menu, and at the bottom, almost hidden, appear white sugars, ultra-processed foods, and white bread.
Obesity in the USA
According to recent data from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), approximately 40.3% of adults (over 20) have obesity, and 22.2% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 as well.
The data in children under 11 are also overwhelming. From 2 to 5 years old, the obesity rate is 12.7%, and from 6 to 11 it is 20.7%.
This results in one out of every five children and adolescents having obesity. This is something that must be eradicated in some way.
More protein, fewer fried foods
One of the changes that has drawn the most attention is the prominence given to proteins, especially those of animal origin. The recommendation speaks of between 1.2 and 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
In the most visible part of the pyramid appear meat, fish, eggs, legumes, and whole dairy products, so that the idea is that eating satisfies more and helps control metabolic health.
Maybe you did not know it, but protein is much more filling than any processed food, so you would eat less but feel much more satisfied.
Fruits and vegetables, now seriously
Along with proteins, fruits and vegetables are the most important part of each day. It recommends at least five servings a day. Some cherry tomatoes, sautéed broccoli with garlic, carrots, or an apple and you already have the menu ready.
Why fruit?
Because a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, they are delicious, filling, and will help you have much more energy.
No fear of fats
For decades they have been public enemy number one, but the problem is not fat itself, but added sugars and refined carbohydrates.
Olive oil, avocado, nuts, and even certain animal products are once again considered valid options within a balanced diet. Of course, saturated fats should not exceed 10% of total daily calories. Eat, but without demonizing food.
What about grains?
They no longer lead the pyramid, and refined ones neither. White bread, industrial pastries, and breakfast cereals are completely relegated to the background. Whole grains do have their place because they provide fiber, but in moderation.
Urgent: stop the obesity crisis
The situation is worrying throughout the country, we have already shown you the CDC data, and the United States is far behind other first-level countries in this regard.
There are four causes indicated for the deterioration of American health: poor diet, exposure to chemicals, sedentary lifestyle, and chronic stress.
It is time to change this so that our children have a healthy and energetic childhood, right?
The cost of a poor diet is weighing heavily on America. Today, under President Trump’s leadership, common sense has been restored to federal food and health policy.
It’s time we reduce healthcare costs & MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN. 🥦🍇 pic.twitter.com/JYWBVqAwYc
