For many years, people in North Carolina have feared going to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you have ever been to one, you know what we are talking about… Long queues, hours and hours of waiting, and the feeling of wasting a whole day just to renew a driving license or filing a form. But, this is about to change.

Starting this month, a new law will allow drivers to make a lot of DMV paperwork completely online, so this means no more queuing, wasting time, nor stress. Let’s explain a bit more about this change, shall we?

The need for a change

For decades, visiting DMV offices has been one of the most stressful experiences for drivers in North Carolina and the entire country. The problem has always been the same: too many people, old systems, and a lot of time waiting.

The truth is that the DMV uses a very old technology, most of them were made in the 80s when the population was lower. Today, this has changed and there are more people, but the system is the same. This is why the DMV offices are always crowded, the service is slow, and the processes are inefficient.

Everything remained the same until something unexpected happened: te COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, almost everything went digital (lessons, work, doctor appointments, etc) and people started to wonder: ‘’if I can do all of this online, why can’t I do the same with DMV?’’ So, after 50 years, the government decided to update the DMV system. Hurray!

New North Carolina law

This new law, known as House Bill 245, brings an important change for all North Carolina drivers: this month of October most DMV services could be done online, removing the need of visiting the offices.

Thanks to this law, people could renew or update their driving licenses online. The goal is to make the process faster, easier, and accessible for citizens of North Carolina. However, there are some situations which they will need to go to the DMV offices, for example when:

  • Getting a REAL ID for the first time, since that requires checking physical documents.
  • Attending hearings related to driving violations or other legal matters.

How will drivers benefit from this change?

Well, North Carolina citizens could do almost all DMV paperworks from home, this will include:

  • Renewing driver’s licenses
  • Ordering duplicate licenses if the original is lost
  • Upgrading provisional licenses
  • Changing personal or vehicle information
  • Booking virtual appointments
  • Requesting title-related documents

These services are available 24 hours, the 7 days of the week, from anywhere with an internet connection. This means you won’t have to ask for a day off work or adjust your schedule just to do some paperwork. Now, you can do it in a few minutes, from your computer or smartphone. Isn’t it great?

We are sure this law is going to help many drivers to manage their time in a much better way.

Impact on the future

This change represents a huge change for North Carolina and every driver there. It also shows that when technology is used wisely, it can make life easier and more convenient for everyone. It’s a sign of real progress and of a state that listens to its citizens, creating solutions that save time and reduce stress.

The future isn’t coming, it is already here. And it begins in North Carolina, where the modernization of the DMV marks the start of a new, smarter, and smoother way to drive forward. What do you think about this change? Do you think many people will benefit from it?
