The document everyone wants

Since its introduction in 2007, the permanent license has been a relief for drivers: one single procedure and no more paperwork ever again, a true dream for those of us who are a bit forgetful. However, for years it was unavailable due to administrative and budget issues.

Now that it’s back, many people are realizing this might be their last chance to get a license with no expiration, and it really is great not having to renew it every few years, don’t you think? What does “permanent” really mean?

It doesn’t mean it’s impossible to lose it. If you commit serious violations, the authorities can revoke the license just like any other. Who can apply for it?

The good news is that not everyone has to retake the test. If you already have a type A license from CDMX, it won’t be necessary to prove your driving skills again. Only those who have never had a license in the capital will need to pass the driving test to obtain the permanent one.

Until when can it be requested?

The deadline to apply for the license is December 31, 2025. The government has not confirmed whether there will be extensions, and everything indicates that this program could end for good. So if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to do the process, that time is now, hurry up!

How do you apply?

The procedure can be done online through the official government portal of CDMX. You only need a Llave CDMX account, your documents and to make the required payment.

Here are the requirements:

Valid ID

• Proof of address less than 3 months old
• Payment for the process, which is 1500 Mexican pesos
• A Llave CDMX account

Once the online process is completed, you’ll be able to pick up your physical license at one of the designated offices. You’ll also receive a digital version, useful as a backup.

What if I lose it?

The permanent license remains valid as long as you don’t commit serious violations. If you break severe traffic rules, such as driving under the influence or causing a serious accident, you could lose your permanent license just like any other document.

Why is it important to apply now?

Because the time is now. These licenses haven’t been issued in over a decade and we don’t know when they’ll be available again, so you have until the end of the year to apply and forget for life about renewing your license!
