This is Pitufino, a corgi-type puppy. Five months old and the sweetest look you will ever see. Have you seen his little ears? Who would not fall in love with him? Well, Pitufino was adopted and ten days later he was returned to the shelter. The reason, according to his adopters, was that he did not learn quickly to do his business on the training pads. And with those tender little eyes, he went back to the shelter to wait for a family.
The news has caused anger and sadness and many questions, how is it possible that someone returns a dog like this? And above all, why is adoption treated like a test and not like a commitment?! It is a life that expected to have the love of a family and is back in a cage…
Ten days that were not enough
From the Adopta un Ángel Mascota shelter they confirmed the return quite angrily, the person who had adopted him explained that Pitufino did not adapt to the pad and that the smell of pee was unpleasant to them, and that is why they backed out of the adoption. They are not going to love you either, my friend. Do we really need to explain that animals are not mobile phones and do not come factory configured? That they need time, affection, a lot of patience and a routine?
Back to square one
For Pitufino, as for any animal, going back to the shelter is not just going back, it is going backwards to the same rusty cage he had already managed to leave. It is very sad that this happens so often because animals feel that abandonment.
Pitufino’s story
Five months ago Pitufino came into the world, with those little eyes and that face that makes anyone fall in love. His family left him at the shelter promising to come back with food and visits, but they never returned for him. He waited three months and then this family became interested in him, only to abandon him again ten days later.
What does adopting an animal imply?
Whether it is a puppy or an adult animal, the first thing they need is time to adapt and all your attention. Even more so when they are puppies, who do not really know where to pee, can be a bit restless at night and may have accidents. But that is something you already know when you decide to adopt an animal, they are like babies but hairier! And at five months they are a bit of a mess, but they do not have to meet your human expectations, they are puppy babies!
Of course, they are not trained in days, it takes repetition, positive reinforcement, consistency and understanding that not everything is a test, it is not a “let’s see how this goes”, it is commitment and loyalty. That little animal may only be in your life for a few years, but you must understand that from the moment you take them for the first time, you become their entire life.
Are there filters to adopt?
Yes, and they are very strict. They usually carry out several questionnaires, they make sure you are prepared to care for a pet and that your home is also ready for it. You also have to sign vaccination and neutering commitments because, above all, our animals must be well cared for.
It is not enough to want to adopt, you have to know what it involves.
Back to abandonment
Of course things happen when an animal returns to the shelter, we refuse to pretend it does not. An animal that has known human affection comes back with stress, anxiety and a lot of distrust.
What is Pitufino like?
Pitufino is small to medium sized, he will weigh around 10 kg, he is sociable with other dogs, vaccinated and dewormed. He cannot yet be neutered due to age and weight, but he is perfectly suited to live in an apartment.
