Planned Parenthood seems to be the talk of the town every now and then. This article is not about the controversy in the United States about defunding this organization, but about a recent cyber attack on one of the companies working with Planned Parenthood, Laboratory Services Cooperative. This situation has resulted in class actions against the company. The affected people claim justice for the exposition of their personal and medical information.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
This is a nonprofit organization that provides different medical services to every person no matter the age, wealth nor gender. Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 in the United States. It tries to protect the right of every citizen to have the power to decide on their life matters.
The services the Planned Parenthood provides are: abortion, birth control, emergency contraception, HIV services, mental health, pregnancy testing and planning, prenatal and postpartum services, sexual and reproductive concerns, STD testing and treatment, gender-affirmation care, vaccines and wellness and preventive care.

The Planned Parenthood services cost is not that much and even free, this difference depends on the patient’s income. If you are a beneficiary of the SSA Medicaid or other public insurance, you can rest assured that they will be accepted by this organization.
The reason why we are talking about Planned Parenthood
Two patients from this organization have started class action lawsuits against a company called Laboratory Services Cooperative (LSC) because of the lack of protection on their personal and medical information. The LSC is also a nonprofit organization and a clinic laboratory which is associated with Planned Parenthood in the U.S.A. so LSC has all the information about patients.
On the 10th of April of 2025, LSC was victim of a cyber attack and all the confidential information was stolen. This means diagnosis labs results, insurance informacion, Social Security numbers and even driving licenses of over 1.6 millions of people in more than 30 states of the U.S was in danger. Imagine someone is in possession of everything about your life and you don’t know what that person will do with all of that. That must be so frustrating.
Patients vs. LSC
We are talking about class actions, this means not only those two previously mentioned patients were the only ones fighting in a legal way for what happened. Instead, they are a representation of all the Planned Parenthood patients who were affected by this security issue.
What they say is that LSC didn’t properly protect their data even though that was one of their goals. Also, they want to make sure it is known the fact that they didn’t allow LSC to save their information, so they were never warned about Planned Parenthood giving patients’ data to LSC. Last thing is that the affected ones want LSC to be legally responsible for what happened since their security system was so weak that the cyber attacks didn’t take so long.
