RAM is under review with almost 2,000 trucks with defective airbags. That’s right, the NHTSA has launched an urgent recall that affects 2,000 Ram trucks, produced in 2018, after detecting that the side airbags do not work correctly, since the inflator could break, burst the airbag and throw metal fragments inside the vehicle, can you imagine how dangerous that could be, right?
So far no accidents have been recorded, but Stellantis and the authorities have launched the notice as quickly as they could to prevent tragedies from happening.
Which models are affected
The official documents report the following vehicles:
- Ram 1500 (DS): about 666 units.
- Ram 2500 (DS): around 870 units.
- Ram 3500 (DS): about 225 units.
What happened?
Apparently, the investigation has revealed that the inflators of the airbags of these vehicles were exposed to humidity while they were being produced, and of course, corrosion did not forgive them. The engineers call it Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), and under pressure, it means that the airbags, when inflating after an accident, can explode. The investigation revealed that some inflators were exposed to humidity during production. So, it could be even worse than the accident because it would act as if it were shrapnel.
The supplier behind these parts is Joyson Safety Systems, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and, surprise, has already had other safety recalls in the past!!
This case adds to a recent list of recalls within the Stellantis group, which are not going through their best moment.
- March 2024: recall of certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300.
- January 2025: recall of Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 manufactured between 2016 and 2020 for the same corrosion problem.
- August 2025: Stellantis opened an investigation after receiving field reports about possible ruptures.
- September 4, 2025: the company confirmed a customer report and another field report linked to the failure in 2018 Ram.
What owners should do
The repair will be free at all official dealerships, starting next October 9 notification letters will begin to be sent, but since last September 18 users can already check the VIN on the NHTSA website to know if their vehicle is included in the recall.
The Stellantis helpline is 1-800-853-1403 and the NHTSA one is 1-888-327-4236.
Why it is so important
It is not a very large number of vehicles in the recall, but it is a risk, one defective inflator can cause serious injuries and even the death of whoever travels in that car, we are not talking about a joke, airbags are designed to save lives, but when they have a manufacturing defect they become the opposite, a danger inside the car itself.
Even big brands like Ram, which are under the Stellantis umbrella along with other major brands in the market, can also put their drivers at risk, so the only way to reduce the risk is to take your car to the workshop and carry out the repair (free) as soon as possible.
Do not hesitate and check the VIN of your vehicle, remember that your life and that of your passengers is at risk.
