May 7th is the most important day on the American calendar, we know it and you know it. You’ve seen this date repeated absolutely everywhere, but it doesn’t hurt to remember that on that day the American landscape will change forever. Especially if you travel regularly within the country. Starting that day, the Real ID will become mandatory at all national airports and federal buildings. We’ll tell you a little more about this important change.

What is the Real ID?

The Real ID is simply a change in the security of national and federal documents with the goal of making them much more secure, both for user identification and to make it impossible for criminals to falsify official documents.

It was established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shortly after the September 11 attacks to prevent anyone with a false identity from accessing secure areas (such as an airplane cabin) or federal buildings. It was in 2005 that Congress passed the Real ID Act, a law requiring all driver’s licenses and state-issued ID cards to meet minimum security requirements before boarding any flight.

How is a Real ID different from other forms of identification?

Generally, if it has a gold or black star in the top corner, you already have a Real ID and nothing to worry about. If not, the TSA may require another document to properly identify you. The Real ID’s features only make the process of verifying your identity much more strict and rigorous.

Can I fly without a Real ID after May 7th ?

The use of Real ID will be mandatory at all airports, or at least that’s what the TSA stipulates. However, if you have documents such as a U.S. passport or a trusted traveller card (such as Global Entry, Nexus, Sentri, or FAST), they can also be your key to boarding the flight. A green card, military ID, or other types of credentials can also be used. Even if your ID is expired, the TSA will be able to accept it up to a year after its expiration date, but if you don’t have one of these documents, we fear you’ll be stranded.

How to get a Real ID?

If you decide to apply for a Real ID, you must do so in person at your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Requirements may vary, but generally you will need:

  • Document that proves your identity (such as a passport or birth certificate).
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Two documents that confirm your address (such as utility bills or bank statements).
  • Proof of legal U.S. residency (if necessary).

The process usually involves a fee and a mandatory photo. Although the process is simple, it is advisable to do so in advance to avoid delays and long waits near the deadline.

You’d better have your license in order before May 7, 2025, which will change all U.S. airport security. While the Real ID isn’t mandatory for all citizens, it will be for those traveling by air within the country without another valid ID. So, to avoid running out of time, if you don’t have a Real ID yet, now’s the time to verify your documents! Take advantage now and make an appointment with your DMV; we don’t want any surprises.
