If we talk about one of humanity’s greatest mysteries, we wouldn’t need to look up, but rather to the east. Mystery has always surrounded the pyramids of Egypt. Those majestic structures that, to this day, still hide secrets that defy all the logic in the world. Archaeologists, explorers, historians, and the curious have tried to decipher how these incredible pyramids were built, and in many cases, alien and Illuminati theories are the ones that prevail. Now, many archaeologists have been investigating what lies beneath the sands of Giza. Really, nothing could have prepared us for what these Italian researchers have found, who claim not only to have discovered tunnels and hidden chambers, but the existence of an underground city beneath the very Pyramid of Khafre.

Hidden under centuries

The Daily Mail has reported that researchers have found, more than 650 meters beneath the Pyramid of Khafre, a water system with underground pathways that lead even deeper into the earth. From the University of Pisa, Corrado Malanga believes that in the future, when the captured images can be expanded, it will be possible to discover an underground city beneath these structures.

Isn’t it incredible to be talking about a complex underground network in a time when knowledge of architecture and engineering was quite limited compared to today? Egypt never stops surprising us.

What do they suggest is down there?

According to the team leading the research, the wells identified beneath Khafre are between 10 and 12 meters in diameter, which is why it’s believed that these structures could be supporting the pyramid. Moreover, Khafre is especially heavy and would need a very solid base to support it, otherwise, it would have ended up sinking.

A future to understand the past

If you’re wondering how they reached these conclusions, it’s all been made possible thanks to new underground scanning techniques using ground-penetrating radar, in other words, radars that map the ground, similar to X-rays. They send waves into the ground that bounce back when they hit something solid, which helps determine the distance to archaeological remains or simply something buried, allowing exploration without destroying the terrain.

Then, the relevant estimations were made. According to the researchers, the constructions date back more than 4,000 years, placing them at the height of the Egyptian Old Kingdom. But some architectural details don’t entirely match what is known from that time period.

Khafre: under debate

It’s clear that anything related to Egypt and the construction of the pyramids comes with an ongoing debate, and this is not the first time this information has come to light, as it has already been dismissed by other experts as false and exaggerated.

Now, Lawrence Conyers, radar expert at the University of Denver, commented that no radar is powerful enough to penetrate the ground so deeply as to discover a real underground city beneath Khafre, which would, in any case, be an invention or an exaggeration. Although he does acknowledge the possibility of small structures (like wells and chambers) that may have existed before the pyramid was built, since the site was sacred to ancient peoples.

Could it be that there really was a city beneath the Pyramid of Khafre? Could it be that we still don’t fully know everything that has happened in the thousands of years that preceded its construction? For now, authorities have restricted access to the area, and more maps and findings from the interior are expected to be released.

Egypt has always sparked a unique curiosity, because its pyramids are structures that no one has yet managed to understand how they were built, but this new discovery makes it clear that perhaps, we knew even less than we thought. Who knows if beneath the desert sands, part of the most enigmatic legacy of humanity still sleeps. And now, finally, we are beginning to wake it up!!
