Millions of people in the U.S. will receive a direct payment from the SSI of up to $967 at the beginning of November. What great news, right? This money is part of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program which is offered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to help low income, elderly, or disabled people.

The SSI is a monthly economic support that aims to guarantee that people in a vulnerable situation can cover their basic needs like housing, food, and medicare. So, let’s find out more about this helpful economic aid.

Ahead SSI payments

Normally, the SSI payments are sent the first day of each month. However, there’s going to be a change on the payment date since it will be a day before, on Thursday 31st of October. What’s the reason behind this change on the calendar? Well, this year November 1 is a weekend and when this happens the SSA sends the payments on the last business day of the previous month. So, SSI recipients will receive their money before November starts without having to wait until the following week.

Who can receive the SSI?

The SSI program is thought to support people with limited economic resources and who match certain requirements established by the SSA. So, let’s have a look at the people who can receive this economic aid:

  • People older than 65 years old.
  • Legally blind people.
  • People with a physical or mental disability and, therefore, can’t work.

If you belong to any of these groups, you should know you also have to follow other conditions:

  • Live in the U.S., whether it’s in any of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • They must not stay outside the country for more than 30 consecutive days.

The SSI program is intended for people who have very little income or savings, so the SSA reviews each applicant’s financial situation before approving benefits.

Let’s talk about money

How much money will recipients of this program receive? Well, that depends on the personal or family situation of each beneficiary. In 2025, the maximum monthly payments established by the SSA are:

  • Up to $967 for an individual.
  • Up to $1,450 for couples who apply together.
  • Up to $484 for people who provide essential care to an SSI recipient.

These new amounts reflect the increase of the 2.5% applied since January of 2025 that aims to compensate inflation. With this adjustment beneficiaries could keep their purchasing power.

Additional requirements

To keep receiving SSI payments without interruptions, beneficiaries must follow certain administrative requirements like: Being American citizen or non-citizens with an approved immigration classification from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

It’s also important to keep residency in the U.S. and notify any change, for example if: you get married, start working, or inherit money. Any change could affect the amount received on the monthly payments, so you’d better notify the SSA to avoid any delays or payment mistakes.

Importance of this program

It remains one of the most important financial support systems in the United States. Every month, it helps millions of seniors and people with disabilities live with more security and stability.

For many, SSI is essential to pay for rent, groceries, or medical expenses. Without this monthly assistance, many Americans would struggle to afford basic needs.

By adjusting the payments each year to reflect inflation, SSI helps protect beneficiaries’ financial well-being and ensures that their money maintains its value over time. So, if you belong to any of the group of people we mentioned before, pay attention to requirements and any changes you may experience.
