AT&T has reached a $177 million legal settlement to compensate all customers who were affected after the two data breaches that occurred in 2024, yes, panic. Users will be able to receive up to $7,500, as long as they present proof of the damages suffered, it is not given to just anyone.
There are 73 million customers whose data ended up on the dark web and others saw their call and message records exposed due to a failure in an external platform… The deadline to file claims will be November 18, 2025, and the court’s final approval is scheduled for December 3, 2025, so you still have time to file your request if you are one of those people whose data was stolen, it is your moment.
What happened with AT&T’s data?
It all happened in March 2024, the company announced that the data of 73 million current and former customers had appeared on the dark web, imagine how scary your data on that network… The information included dates of birth and Social Security numbers. A few months later, in July, a second incident exposed call and message records of almost all its users, after an attack on a cloud service provider.
Both cases triggered multiple lawsuits that ended up being consolidated into two class actions, and now the settlement seeks to close this chapter and move on, although it still depends on the judge’s approval.
Who can file claims?
Not just anyone can file, customers affected by the first attack (the one in March) can receive up to $5,000, but to do so they must prove that they suffered some type of loss related to the breach, so if you have no proof… Good luck.
- Customers affected in the second breach may also file claims, they can claim up to $2,500 for losses that occurred starting April 14, 2024.
- Customers who were victims in both breaches: If you were unlucky enough that your information was compromised in both incidents, AT&T contemplates a maximum compensation of $7,500. To access it, it will be necessary to provide documentation that clearly demonstrates the link between the damages and the breaches.
How to file a claim
Affected customers have two options: complete an online form through the official settlement page or send the documentation by postal mail before November 18, 2025. Those who file their claim must keep in mind that, by doing so, they waive the right to sue AT&T on their own.
Settlement administration is in the hands of Kroll Settlement Administration, which has already begun sending email notifications to customers who may have been affected.
When will payments be received?
Although claims are already open, payments will not be made until the court gives its approval, and that is scheduled for December 3, 2025, in the Northern District Court of Texas. Even if approved, appeals could arise that delay the deadlines, do not despair.
The claim site itself warns: “It takes time to process all forms. Please be patient.” So, you will have to sit and wait.
Is AT&T guilty?
The company has not declared itself guilty, however, if you wonder why they accepted the settlement, it is because being something so mediatic they do not want it to affect the company (this happens in almost all class actions). They prefer to pay and have the matter forgotten.
Cybersecurity problems
Cyberattacks are the order of the day, and nothing is scarier than thinking that our information is ending up in the hands of we do not know who or for what purpose, and that is when we should demand that companies protect us on the net.
