The electricity bill is something that terrifies all of us, and it gets more expensive every time, so we have to save inside the house, and many of us don’t realize that the thermostat can be one of the things we pay for most.

That little device is the boss of your heating, and if it is badly placed, it can make you spend much more than you should, incorrect readings, the boiler turning on when it shouldn’t… So we are going to tell you how to keep your house warm these winter months without your wallet shaking at the end of the month!

Where the thermostat should go

As easy as remembering this, the thermostat should be placed on an interior wall, with no drafts, far from the afternoon sun and without a radiator next to it conspiring to fool it.

Why interior walls?

Because they are more “stable”. Neither extreme cold nor sudden heat. The thermostat there can do its job calmly and give you real readings.

The height

Ideally you should place it between 1.6 and 1.7 meters. At that height it is not affected by the heat that rises or the coolness that stays near the floor. It is exactly the level where it best interprets the temperature that you really feel.

In which room?

In the one where you live the most, not in the coldest one, and that is one of the most common mistakes we make when we install a thermostat, why would you place it in a place where you are never? Even if it is the coldest spot in your house, better place it where you spend the most hours.

Forbidden zones

  • behind furniture or curtains
  • stuck to a window
  • next to a door
  • inside a shelf

All that blocks or distorts the sensor.

And the exterior walls?

The walls that face the street are naturally colder. If you place it there, the thermostat will think your house is a fridge and will turn on the heating more times than necessary.

The ideal temperature

Here experts agree that the ideal temperature for any place ranges between 19 °C and 22 °C, lowering just one degree can reduce your bill by up to 10% monthly!

In addition, keeping a stable temperature also prevents the boiler from starting up every two minutes, which is what consumes the most and causes the most wear.

Other tips

  • Clean the radiators before the cold starts.
  • Do not place furniture that blocks the heat.
  • Check the boiler pressure.
  • Ventilate at least 10 minutes in the morning.
  • Take advantage of natural light when it shines directly.

Are these tricks from the electric companies?

Many people believe that the electricity bill goes up because the companies detect that you spend less and raise the rates so they don’t lose money. Look, king of conspiracy, relax your body. There is no data to support your idea, electricity is simply more expensive every time and unfortunately we are the ones who pay for it. We don’t think there is some guy with a notebook writing down that you search online for tricks to save on your bill and wants to raise it.

To sum up

Remember that even if it seems silly, the place where you put your thermostat is going to help you have a warm house or a kilometer-long electricity bill. And even more now that the cold is arriving.

You decide if you want to save or keep making the same mistakes! Where do you have your thermostat placed? Tell us!
