You also hate cleaning the toilet, we know because we do too, but it is something that has to be done every day and even more with the amount of bacteria that accumulate there. And with time, hard water, limescale and even the simple fact that the bathroom stays unused for several days can leave stains that are hard to remove, and we hate scrubbing them, but now we are here to show you a trick that has gone super viral and will make your bathroom look like it just came out of the catalog: vinegar and baking soda, you won’t need more. Here are our tips.

Why do stains appear in the toilet?

Most cases have to do with hard water, which contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. These build up little by little and leave white or yellowish marks on the ceramic. Other times, the problem is rust residue from the pipes or simply stagnant water, it’s not that you are a bit dirty, don’t worry!

Method 1: vinegar and baking soda, the classic that never fails

The combo of vinegar and baking soda is one of the most used because it is cheap, natural and does not damage the porcelain, plus it is something you always have at home. You just have to pour cleaning vinegar in the toilet, add baking soda, let the mixture bubble, scrub a little and wait a few minutes before flushing. Ideal for light stains, but it is something you will have to do weekly to get the result you need.

Method 2: citric acid

When vinegar and baking soda are not enough, citric acid becomes your best ally. It is more powerful, but still an ecological and safe option. Just apply it on the stained areas, let it act between half an hour and an hour, scrub and rinse. It is perfect for removing tougher limescale build-up.

Safety tips when cleaning the toilet

Even though these products are homemade and less aggressive than others, it is advisable to wear gloves and ventilate the bathroom well, we don’t want you to get dizzy from the smells! Don’t mix different products, especially if they involve bleach or acids, since they could release toxic fumes and you end up in the hospital… Taking care of your health is as important as keeping the toilet clean, don’t you think?

How often should I clean the toilet?

The basic recommendation is once a week, although if you live in an area with hard water or your bathroom is used a lot, you might have to repeat the routine more often.

Mini routine

If you are one of those who, like us, hate the bathroom, take advantage and do something else while it’s time to clean. An audiobook, music, whatever so time goes by quickly while you brush the toilet bowl, besides, we love seeing the bathroom clean, right?

Other questions:

  • Can I use chlorine to clean the toilet? Of course, you can use chlorine or bleach as disinfectants and to fight germs and mold, but you have to be very careful!!
  • How long should I let the solution sit before scrubbing? A couple of minutes should be enough, but if it doesn’t go away with the first scrub you will have to repeat the process and leave it a bit longer.
  • And if it doesn’t go away? You can try scrubbing with a pumice stone, but you must first be aware of what material your toilet is made of because you could break it!

Cleaning toilet stains doesn’t have to be a drama, you see that vinegar, baking soda or citric acid can solve your problem. The easiest thing is to be consistent and not let the stains build up!
