At this point in the game we are not going to tell you how much we like Toyota, nor how good its vehicles are because you know that Toyota dominates several markets in several different countries, and not only with its star models (Corolla, Yaris or RAV4). The Japanese market has managed to become the benchmark manufacturer in the automotive market, and a model that is very little known to the general public has now become its most important piece, a real success! Especially for those who need a functional vehicle without falling into the SUV fever.

Which model are we talking about?

Without a doubt the Toyota Proace City, a compact van that has gained ground in a segment that it had never dominated before, because the kings of this segment were Renault, Citroën and Peugeot, or even the Peugeot Rifter (with which Toyota shares many points in common as a result of its collaboration with Stellantis).

Why is the Proace City successful?

Because it adapts to everything, it is a vehicle that offers practicality for both families and professionals who need space without wanting to sacrifice comfort, there are versions, therefore, for passengers and also commercials, thus they have managed to attract more attention from their customers.

In addition, the model is available with a 100 hp diesel engine and manual transmission as well as detectable load capacity, in other words, a real a gem for those looking for a functional vehicle but who don’t want to spend a fortune.

What about its price?

Toyota is not new to the automotive market, and they have positioned the Proace City with a fairly aggressive pricing strategy, the most affordable version (the base option) is around $18,000, something incredible if we compare it with the Citroen Berlingo ($26,000), the Peugeot Rifter (from $25,000) and the Renault Kangoo (from $25,090).

Although, based on its historical trajectory, we would trust a French model more, Toyota’s reliability and reputation have been enough to capture the market’s full attention (just like a candy in a schoolyard) of those buyers who seek longevity and quality in their vehicles.

What about this competition?

As we said, this segment of the market has historically been dominated by French brands, because they have been dominating the market for years and Toyota, of course, knows this too, but the Japanese manufacturer is playing its cards by gaining ground, and taking advantage of the fact that in the eyes of the world, it is one of the most trusted brands.

Obviously, we are not talking about overthrowing these French brands, that will not be easy (not for Toyota or for anyone else) but for now, the strategy of the Japanese brand seems to be working, and once it has entered the competition, it will be very difficult for anyone to take it out of the ring. A robust option, without complications, “customizable” for users or merchandise… And with the backing of one of the best brands in the world. Who wouldn’t want to opt for a vehicle like this?

As grandmothers say, “work hard in silence, let success make the noise”, and that’s what Toyota is doing, letting its success speaks for itself. The Proace City is amply proving that not everything in the market revolves around SUVs and that another panorama of functional vehicles on the roads is possible. Resistance, good value for money, functionality and perseverance… Toyota will continue to gain followers even if it doesn’t grab the headlines!
