Perhaps it has been one of the rumours that has taken the longest to become a reality, but here it is, after years of speculation, Toyota is going to do it. The MR2 is back, that’s right, ever closer to becoming a reality. Although it seems that the Japanese giant was avoiding any kind of relationship with this model, the reality is closer than we think.
Although we already know that Toyota’s bet is to move towards the electric sector, the possibility that the MR2 will not be and will carry a combustion engine is on the lips of the entire industry. We are going to tell you what we know about this model that has generated so much intrigue!
A very exclusive two-seater
According to the leaks, this vehicle will be focused on fans of classic sports cars, offering a pure and uncomplicated driving experience. No batteries or hybrid systems: just a powerful engine and a lot of desire to burn gasoline. Initially, it was speculated that the new MR2 was related to the GR Yaris through its engine, and the fact is that we have gone from a supposed electric MR2 to a completely thermal one (and without hybrid technology) but, it seems that the reality is going to be much more powerful still, that it will be installed in the centre of the vehicle and that it will offer much more performance.
And the price?
That is the fact that we like the least.. The starting price is estimated at around $60,000, but if we take into account other market references, such as, for example, that the base price of the GR Supra starts at $65,000, it is not very clear what its real price will be, we will have to wait to know that information.
New engine… and all-wheel drive
Toyota is not messing around and is working on a new generation 2.0-litre petrol engine that will become the new heart of this MR2, as Toyota intends for it to be a pure sports car (which is why it is avoiding electrification plans for this vehicle).
The most surprising thing is that another of the speculations will make history if it really comes true, and that is that the MR2 will have all-wheel drive, which will generate brutal grip and stability that will make it faster and safer, but without losing the adrenaline that driving a sports car produces.
When will they roar through the streets?
This vehicle is still in its initial phase (although the project is already very advanced), so it is expected that the new Toyota MR2 2026 will be officially presented throughout this year 2025, and that its production phase will begin from 2026, therefore, and according to the estimated figures, we would be talking about it being in 2027 when for the first time, these cars arrive at our dealerships and we can see them driving through our streets.
We still don’t know if there will be exclusivity, if it will be presented only in Japan, if it will arrive in Europe or the United States, but bringing a 100% gasoline vehicle is a challenge in a world that seeks sustainability
But who are we to tell Toyota what to do? For now, we are mere spectators who are looking forward to seeing how this beast develops on the roads. Will it be an exclusive jewel for a lucky few or will Toyota take it on a tour of the world?
