Toyota has made headlines again with one of those decisions nobody saw coming, as they always do. The Japanese brand surprised everyone by unveiling its GR Supra MkV Final Edition in California, a limited edition that marks the end of the fifth generation of the Supra. And while the price is significantly lower than in Europe or Japan, there’s a small tradeoff: less power than the original model. Many users are wondering if this one is worth it. Let’s break it down.
A very special Toyota… with a catch
The American GR Supra MkV Final Edition will cost around $69,000, which makes it much more affordable than the A90 Final Edition in other markets, where it costs over $100,000. But of course, there’s fine print: the US version comes with a slightly “lighter” engine setup, meaning it has less power, and this hasn’t been well received by fans who were expecting the standard version of this vehicle.
What it does keep: lots of style
Aesthetically, there are no complaints. This edition features 19-inch matte black wheels, a carbon fiber rear spoiler, glossy side mirrors, and graphics inspired by the GT4 race model. On the back, the Supra badge comes in black, a detail that doesn’t go unnoticed. Plus, aerodynamic upgrades have been added so the car doesn’t just look good, but also performs better. Clearly, it will turn heads with all these specs.
Inside the cabin, there’s Alcantara upholstery (a type of leather), red stitching, matching red seat belts, and even a special camo car cover for this edition. Everything is thoughtfully crafted.
The engine: good, but not the most powerful
The American Supra carries a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. Not bad at all, especially when paired with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, larger Brembo brakes, and a recalibrated suspension for better cornering. But it’s not the same engine as the European or Japanese A90, which hits 429 horsepower. And yes, you can feel the difference.
Limited production and release date
Toyota will produce only 900 units for North America. By comparison, the A90 Final Edition outside the US will have just 150 units. The model is expected to hit dealerships in spring 2025, with production ending in 2026.
What about the Nissan Z NISMO?
The competition is tough. The base price of the 2025 GR Supra is $56,250, while the Nissan Z NISMO starts at $66,890. In terms of sales, Nissan is ahead: more than 3,100 Z units sold in 2024, compared to just over 2,600 Supras. With this final edition, Toyota wants to close that gap while preparing for the arrival of the sixth generation Supra (which will keep rear-wheel drive, although its engine is still unknown).
A bittersweet farewell
Yes, it’s cheaper. Yes, it’s still a Supra. But this final edition leaves a slightly strange taste: it has the style and the legacy, but not all the power or exclusivity of the A90. Still, it’s a smart move from Toyota, which seems to have found the sweet spot between excitement and cost control. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see how the market reacts… and what the next generation of this modern classic will bring.
