The TSA (Transportation Security Administration of the U.S.) has a new digital identification system. And if you haven’t taken a flight yet, here’s what’s happening: you no longer need to wait in line with your ID, because everything is now done through a digital identification system.
Even though it seems like everything will go faster since you don’t have to wait, many people find it quite complicated. Some say it’s made their lives easier, while others say they almost missed their flight because of a technical glitch at the boarding gate…
There are already more than 250 terminals across the country where it’s in operation, and the goal is to make all security checkpoints faster using only your phone. But not many people are convinced yet that this is going to work, so here’s the full story.
What it is and how it should work
The idea is that instead of pulling out your ID or driver’s license, you add your identification to an app (Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet).
When you get to the checkpoint, you just hold your phone near an NFC reader or show a QR code. Just like when you pay with your phone, just as simple.
Some airports even request a facial photo to verify your identity (although that’s optional). In theory, the whole process should take just a few seconds and save you from that classic moment of panic “where did I put my wallet?”
Less waiting, more security
According to the TSA, this new system aims to make everything faster and safer.
Less physical contact with documents, fewer lines, and more accuracy when verifying identities.
When technology stays on the ground
A quick look at Reddit shows the other side of the story. Many users say they went through security without showing their physical ID, something that theoretically should never happen!!!
And others complain that the system didn’t recognize them, or that they had to repeat the process three times before it worked, uh.
Depending on the internet at such a tense moment is definitely not ideal, the app might not open, or the airport’s reader might not work (which isn’t exactly rare, right?)
“Sometimes it works perfectly, and other times it’s like it doesn’t even exist. It depends on the airport, the agent, and the day” wrote one traveler.
“Adjustment phase”
The TSA acknowledges that the system is still in its adaptation phase and that glitches are part of the improvement process. They also emphasize that for now, carrying a physical ID is still mandatory.
Privacy and trust
One of the biggest concerns for users is privacy, since this system uses biometric data (like facial photos) to verify identity. And although the TSA insists that these images are not stored, many people are skeptical and believe this kind of system requires maximum transparency and security.
A single error, data leak, or misuse of information could undermine public trust…
Is it worth using right now?
That’s for you to decide. For now, the system is completely optional. If you prefer not to complicate things, stick with your physical license or passport; if you want to try the new system, go ahead, but remember, it can still fail.
For now, the smartest choice might be the usual one: keep your phone charged… and your ID in your pocket, just in case!
