The TSA will ask you for valid identification documents. It doens’t matter if you don’t have the Real ID yet, but the TSA will need you to identificate yourself with a document that it is valid for them. This is a very strict authority, so if you don’t have a valid identification document, there will be negative consequences. So, let’s see what these documents are all about and what could happen if you don’t have them.
A new document: the Real ID
This is a new identification document the government has introduced in order to improve theUnited States’ security having in mind previous negative cases. So, the government has come up with the Real ID, which is basically the driving license or identification card with a gold or black star at the upper corner. That’s it, that’s what differentiates a regular ID document from the new Real ID.
It is important that you start making an appointment with your nearest DMV and obtain the Real ID because it will be used for many important situations. For now, it is needed for domestic flights in the U.S. and to enter official buildings.
Is there a date for this new document?
Yes, there is. It was this last 7th of May and, since then, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is asking for this new Real ID. Since this document is very recent, the TSA is allowing travellers to show other documents instead of the Real ID like: a current passport, a Global Entry card, Defence Department card and many others. You can check all the different valid documents on the TSA website.
‘My passport is expired, I couldn’t travel anywhere!’
Well, not really. It is true that if you are travelling outside the United States, you couldn’t do it because most countries ask you for a passport with at least 6 monts of validity. However, it is not the same for domestic flights since the TSA allows you to use your expired passport after 2 years of that expiration date.
Troubles with the TSA
It is recommended to follow what the TSA says and renew your documents, in case you don’t have the Real ID yet, because you could have some trouble with you airport experience.
With no Real ID and no other valid alternative, the TSA will give you a hard time at the airport and there will be chances that you could even lose your flight. The TSA process when you can’t show any valid ID is to ask you very specific questions about your life and your purpose for leaving, and they will ask you for other documents and they will have to check your identity.
Get it now!
I know the airport process when you don’t have any documents is a bore, that’s why we and the TSA recommen you to get your Real ID as soon as possible. It is not that difficult, you just have to go to the Department of Motro Vehicles (DMV) of your state and hand over an ID, your legal residency in the U.S., your current address and the Social Security number.
Make sure your state doesn’t require another document since every state has its own requirements. You can click her to check your local DMV: https://www.usa.gov/state-motor-vehicle-services
Travelling is a fantastic experience that could be annoyed by a document, so you should get your documents in order to avoid any issue with the TSA. You can also arrive earlier to the airport and you can solve any problem because you have enough time to do it. Don’t let these documents delay or make you lose your flight, act in advance!
