Winter is not going to forgive Christmas and it is coming with bad weather news for a large part of the country. A dozen states have been warned about very heavy snowfall, strong winds, and blizzards capable of paralyzing entire regions.
The National Weather Service has warned that even in mountainous areas up to 20 inches of snow could accumulate, with wind gusts exceeding 60 km/h. This will be especially difficult for anyone who has to leave home, particularly in the Midwest, the Great Lakes, and the mountainous West.
A very dangerous storm
It arrives shortly after an Arctic cold wave and, although it will move quickly, it should not be underestimated. Experts warn that snow, ice, and wind together can cause power outages, impassable roads, and airport closures.
Local authorities are already asking people to avoid unnecessary travel and to prepare for possible supply outages lasting several hours.
Blizzards
One of the biggest dangers will be blizzards. Snow lifted by the wind can cause visibility to disappear in seconds, so even drivers with experience in these conditions can become stranded or have accidents. Extreme caution is needed behind the wheel.
Midwest and Great Lakes
Midwestern states and the Great Lakes region are preparing for between 3 and 12 inches of snow. Cities like Chicago have already activated emergency plans because the snowfall could last several days and complicate street clearing.
Buffalo
In Buffalo, up to 14 inches are expected with winds of 35 miles per hour. Road closures and public transportation delays are expected, so it is best to prepare a supply bag and stay at home.
Wyoming
Travel only if absolutely necessary. Authorities are asking people to avoid road travel and outdoor activities, especially in areas such as Powder River Pass or Granite Pass, because there is a real risk of becoming isolated and the likelihood that some stretches will be impassable is higher than ever.
And after that?
After hitting the center of the country, the system will move toward the Northeast, bringing more snow, more ice, and more wind, meaning many more regions will be affected. This winter pattern is expected to remain unstable in the coming days.
How do we prepare?
First of all, as we have repeated several times, do not go out unless it is necessary. Check your heating, fully charge all your batteries, and buy enough food to get through these days at home. Stay informed only through official sources.
Winter in North America continues to be very challenging despite climate change, especially with blizzards, which as you have seen are very dangerous. Alerts are active and will likely expand if conditions worsen. Avoid moving around, grab a blanket, hot chocolate, and survive this “apocalypse” at home.
Basic tips to survive:
- Do not underestimate the snow (even if it is “only 20 cm”), it is beautiful but we do not want to risk our lives. Dress warmly if you are going out.
- Leave home only if it is strictly necessary. If you are not a doctor, an emergency delivery worker, or someone with zero self love, stay inside.
- If you do not have chains, proper traction, or experience, the car turns into a sled, do not go out with the car.
- Have “lockdown food”, bread, rice, pasta, canned food, coffee.
- Dress like an onion, with many layers. It is cold, it is winter.
- Never clear snow in a hurry or with hot water on your car.
- If you have to go out, walk with short steps, body slightly leaning forward (dignity optional).
- Charge your phone.
