New Tesla Supercharger station in Cordoba, Spain

The electric vehicle company is expanding their Supercharger network

Tesla Supercharger station

One of the big hurdles with electric cars continues to be where to charge them, especially in long road trips that span longer than the range of the car. Some countries are better prepared than others, but companies like Tesla are now figuring out that if they want to sell more vehicles, they are going to have to start taking charge (excuse the pun) of the charging stations as well to ensure that their drives are not left without infrastructure once they have purchased the car.

One example of countries with perhaps lacking infrastructure is Spain, which does boast 60 Supercharger stations, but that is insufficient when considering the size of the country and the placement of said stations.

The new Tesla Supercharger station

Due to the European directive that announced that starting in 2035 there would be no new combustion engine cars sold within its frontiers, many governments, including the Spanish one, have started incentivizing both their manufacturers and their consumers to start moving towards electric cars. And while this is all and well, the reality is that the infrastructure does not support this move and will not for a very long time.

This is why some private companies, like Tesla, are putting in the effort into creating charging stations that consumers can use, but these are still few and far between.

Sadly Tesla, does not seem to be going through their best moment as a company. In 2024 they registered some of the lowest sales since they started producing cars, but they are aiming to turn that around, not just with presales of the Tesla Model Y 2025 (they have already pre sold 50,000 units of this new model known as Juniper) but also with the new Tesla Model 3. After all the Model 3 was the most sold electric car in 20024.

But in order to continue to sell electric vehicles and go past the pioneers and early adopters and capture the attention of the everyday drivers, they will need to turn their focus to the charging infrastructure within the country.

And they have put their money into infrastructure in the past. Tesla owns more that 60.000 Superchargers worldwide, but, as we have said, only 60 of them are in Spain. These stations offer the possibility of 275km of range with only 15 minutes of charging time, which would solve the problem of needing to stop for a quick charge if there were more of them available in key spots around the country.

Thankfully, there are good news for the Spanish electric vehicle drivers, as Tesla has opened a new Supercharge station in Cordoba, one of Spain’s mid size cities. The station, which is located in the outskirts of the city, is an old service station that the company has reconfigured to meet the need of electric vehicle charging stations. The image has also gone through a revamp, making it part of the Tesla branding to ensure that customers get the full experience.

While this Supercharger is still quite small, only eight charging stations, which is meager if we compare it to other Tesla stations, like the one in Florida that has two hundred points of charge, it is a good beginning to ensure that those who live in the area can now access a convenient and affordable place to fast charge their vehicles. It will also be nice come the summer, when many people travel to the south on vacation and will need a place to stop and recharge that is conveniently located, and Cordoba definitely fits the bill for many a popular destination.

The prices are also something to consider, as this new station will charge between 0,51 kWh and 0,56 kWh depending on the time of day.
